Would there be a problem swapping the gears from my 85 DRW to my 78SRW axle. The 85 has a broken gov lock in it, and the 78 is open I believe, allowing me to put in a Detroit right?

Nope swap away. You will have to some setup on the gears though. Pinion depth backlash and get a good pattern.
