Really quick question
Looking to grab some spare axles shafts for my D44 and 14bff.

I have a 3/4 ton 14bff. Does that mean I can only get shafts from that axle? Or can I use dually 1 ton shafts? How about the newer "ribbed" 14bff like those in 89-91 suburbans?

Lastly, the rears just come out once the outer bolts are off. That and the silicone sealing them. The front needs everything from the hub out taken off to remover the shafts. Does the cover need to be accessed?

thanks:waytogo:

8 bolts pull the shaft out. 3/4" or 19mm socket to remove 8 bolts. save the bolts for spares.

srw axle and narrow c&c axle same shaft.

wide drw ( fender flares ) is its own on shafts.

van axle is its own on shafts

and i have never my self seen a blown 14ff shaft. only read of 1 on here years a go.

there was a wicked video on youtube of a 14b shaft braking. Made a horrible sound. At some of the junkyards around me, they do a 50% sale from time to time. So I'd prolly go and pull some D44 and 14b shafts at that time. I can get 14s all day long, but the D44 are far out numbered by 10b. I'd probably only pay 20-25 bucks for a set, cheap spares I think, but I always think overkill/ over prepare.

To answer your question about needing to get into the diff cover on either axle would be negative. Rear simply remove 8 bolts ane remove axle, front remove everything from knuckle out off then remove shaft.

Are you guys that serious?! LMAO
I like having spare stuff, especially if I don't need to carry them (leave at camp)
You're all laughing at me ahahaha dammit. I swear, there have been many occasions when I have the right tools or extra parts for other people when dirtbiking/ quading lol.

Are all D44 CHEVY axle shafts the same? If I see a D44 under a blazer, sub, pickup....no mater the year....will it work?

They will all work, BUT the early D44 had smaller shafts and axle joints. Don't know when they changed, but my 71 had the smaller shafts/joints.

that was probably the flat top knucked ones right? I know where the other style D44 is locally, I think it's on a late 70 pickup. LOL with 2wd drivetrain. Man I saw a suburban Friday that had axles but was 2wd drivetrain also. Blasphemy

As mentioned, '70 or so and older D44's used tiny u-joints. Every other GM D44 will use the same shafts so it's very easy to find spares.

As for finding spare 14 bolt shafts, IMO that's silly. You won't break them, especially not with a D44 front.
