on the crapper...
Sorry in advance for the long post (should put that before all my posts :D )

Background:

I bought a '91 K5 with a bad 14BFF. PO says he ran it without oil and froze the pinion bearing. I finally get around to taking it apart today, and find this :doah::

How long did it take you to spot it? Here's a closeup:

My budget is already shot for the year , so anything I do to fix this is gonna put of other mods like crossover, D60 (I wish), rear shackle flip instead of blocks, engine upgrades, rear discs, etc. off for another year. So my questions are: Do I need a whole new diff carrier (junkyard or ARB?), Or can I swap in a Detroit and call it good? Is the pinion bearing support OK? If I get a carrier (and/or pinion bearing support) from a junkyard, how can I tell they are OK? I can't really pull it all apart there in the junkyard.

You can swap in a detroit or buy new spiders. Look in the classified section

Are you sure the gears are good......they were ran without lube....for how long?

I should have also mentioned that I already have a new 4.88 R&P (thick) and master install kit for it. That was all I thought I was going to need.

I would replace the entire carrier just for safe measure. Might even find a complete diff with detroit for less than the parts would cost. Worth a try anyway.

If you have parts that will help BGKYK5 then send him a PM about it. Any openly posted sales pitch in Le Garage will get deleted.

I don't see anything in that carrier that would make me replace it. I would drop a detroit in it and call it good.

Well I would replace bearings and such but I think the carrier is good.

This is my first diff rebuild so I'm not sure what wear is OK and what is too much. I know I wouldn't put together an engine that looked like that, but diffs are a different kind of animal. Any other opinions on carrier and/or pinion support wear?

I'd love to get an ARB and new pinion support, but that would be around $1200 with the compressor. I'd figure $500 for a detroit if I can keep the carrier and pinion support, otherwise get those items at a junk yard. Cheapest option would be just get the minimal parts I need from a junk yard (maybe just the cross pin, spiders, and side gears). But then I'd need to tear it all apart to add a locker down the road. Just thinking out loud here.

he has the parts, who would he sell them too, himself? he started the thread.:doah: you noobs mods. or was the post already deleted?

I would put a detroit in it. I can't tell from the pics what type of shape the pinion support is in, but getting one from a junkyard couldn't be easier.

Is there any way to check the condition of a pinion support from a junkyard? With the pinion installed, the only thing I can think to check is how smoothly it rotates (unless they have a press). Same question for an open carrier. Or do you just play the odds?

i have a cross if you "WANT" it for "FREE", im not trying to sell this. this way all you have to do is weld up all that is good and call it done, PM me with your address, jason.

Yes, there is a lot you don't see.

I encourage you to help other members wherever you can but the standing rules are clear about open parts offers in this forum. All you have to do is send a simple PM to avoid the issue.

Bit the bullet and ordered a Detroit from PORC. Oh well, it's only money (or more accurately debt). I still haven't decided whether to get a "new" pinion support.

In case anybody is still following this thread, here are some more pinion support pics. Does the outer bearing bore look normal, or is this excessive wear? Anyone, anyone.... Buler.....Buler?
