1996 C3500 DRW dumptruck (my old work truck) donated this beauty. From my old job (city schools), this truck was the "salt shaker" (spread road salt). Building maintenance brought the truck to the mechanic saying it needed rear brakes.
Gear oil was leaking out the ends, had ruined the shoes.

Upon further investigation, the gov-lock had exploded. Not sure when, but it did. Metal shavings ruined every bearing in the axle, including both inner and outer wheelbearings. A 'howl' was mentioned but they thought it was the tires.

So I am thinking this had to happen a while ago, for enough metal pieces to work their way to the wheel bearings. And they just kept drivin' er.
Another instance of when the moniker "gov-bomb" is appropriate.

fyi, the mechanic that took the diff apart initially said he filled a spraypaint cap with metal shavings from inside the diff.
Local chevrolet dealership rebuilt entire axle, all new bearings & brakes & gov-bomb (gears were apparently fine) for the measly sum of ~$2300 :eek1: :eek1: :eek1:

EDIT: Sorry about the large by huge pics.

Jeez! And the Gov lock prob cost more than a Detroit! What a piece of shizer!

Mine never exploded, but it never worked right neither

Pics dont work for me. Yeah dealer is high, we would have done the whole thing for around 1500 with new gears and a locker.
