14BFF Hub Issue - HELP! Updated, now with free Carnage Pics

Get two new nuts. Take the die grinder to the first one, and remove the threads, making it into a spacer. Slide that on first, then tighten the new one on top of it where the fresh threads are. I know its probably not approved by the web wheeler engineers, but I'd do it. It's up to you really.

That's probably what I would do too. I see no problem with it.

To the original poster, your hub should come off. I don't think you forgot anything, it may just be stubborn

Yeah, if you got your bearing out, there should be nothing else in the way. Double check to make sure those shoes aren't hanging up. Sometimes there can be a bit of a lip worn into the edge of the drum that will hang on the shoes pretty good, even if the brakes aren't dragging. It'll move a little, and can even feel springy just a bit, but won't budge past that at all. I'll bet you need to loosen that adjuster more.

BFH and a lot of sweat did the trick. I must have beat on that sucker with a 4lb mini sledge 100 times with it moving a 1/4 millimeter with each hit. It is ugly. Carnage pics tomorrow.

14BFF question: My axle is supposedly out of a 3/4 ton '79 sub. I got some pics from a guy with a 14BFF for sale out of a 3/4 ton '79 sub. It looks like the shock mounts are different. His hang down a bunch more. Other than trying to share space with rocks, any issues or thoughts?

I just swapped in a 14BFF from a 2wd. My shocks were too short, so I bought longer shocks & now the shock body won't clear the axle tube. The 2wd brackets are way low for this. I used a 14BSF once from a 2wd & had no clearance issues.

Well that makes sense. I know my current rear axle is from a 4WD sub (front axle is from same vehicle), but the new one could be from a 2WD sub. Sounds like I should avoid that one since I don't feel like fabbing new lower shock mounts (especially since I don't have a welder). Kinda hard to see, but here is the pic the guy sent me.

The ones on my axle hang rather low as well, so I bought some of Kert's radiused shock tabs. I'm just going to cut the old ones off and put these where ever my shocks hang down. I can atleast tack weld it on, then drive it to a welder for him to lay a nice pretty bead.

OK, here are the carnage pics. Well carnage is perhaps too strong a word, but there is broken stuff! :doah:

Here are the missing hub threads

And again

Look at all the crap that fell out of the drum!

Here are the promised broken parts. Highlights include the nut I had to brake into 3 pieces, the loose rollers and the seriously mangled roller cage.

And last but not least - the brakes. Looks like it spent some time at the bottom of a lake huh?

I should post this up too. This is what my lower shock mount looks like. Compare to the pic a few posts up. Anybody know what vehicles go which style shock mount?

Yeah, that spindle is shot. I probably wouldn't run that one. Brakes weren't too bad though, I've seen a lot more stuff fall out of the drum before. Had one that had a seized up adjuster, had to cut a hole in the backing plate with the grinder, reach the sawzall into there and cut the adjuster in half, just to get the stupid thing apart.

Honestly, if you have that much carnage at the wheel bearings there has probably been a bunch of metal run through all of the bearings.

As for brakes, that's pretty typical. Its not necessarily good, but it doesn't surprise me.

~5 years back I noticed the truck wanted to pull to one side while braking. I decided to pull the rear drums to check everything out and found that 1/2 of the components from the rear passenger drum were missing :eek1:. Apparently they were ground up by the drum/shoes. Plenty of dust fell out of that drum when I pulled it off :haha:

If your wheel bearings are that bad, especially off of a truck that you don't know the history about, I would bet that all of the bearings in that axle are toast. It takes serious misuse or lack of lubrication to destroy wheel bearings like that.

Given the new information, I would look for another rear end.

Here is what little of the axle history I know. The PO got it off a '79 3/4 ton burb and installed it on the K5 and ran it for less than a day before the pinion seized. He forgot to check the lube and it was dry. I bought the K5 from him thinking I just needed a new R&P and master install kit. Took it apart and found the cross shaft in the diff busted too. So I installed a brand new 4.88 R&P and Detroit with all new bearings. I was just about to check the pattern when I found the spindle problem. I am sure the other wheel bearings are toast too.

The first pic is from a 2WD truck and the next pic is from a 4WD truck. Cutting off and replacing the shock mounts is an easy project if you have a welder and grinder or sawz all.

Johnnychimpo, I've emailed the guy on craigslist twice with no response. I'm trying to get a hold of the guy on Tennessee Off Road, but I can't remember my password to PM him, and they aren't responding to my request for a new PW.

4X4High, that is what I thought. That complicates things a bit.

Grinder - :D
Sawzall - :D
Welder - :doah:

Update: The one on craigslist sold. I was able to get the cell number of the other guy. I'll give him a call today.

It was the free one, but I just found out that it is also missing the bearing caps. Back to the drawing board.
