Hey guys I'm at work and noticed this, this morning. My 14bff on my K5 is leaking gear dope out the driver's side hub where the axle joins it and is throwing it all over the wheel pretty bad. So I'm guessing I got a seal going bad somewhere and was wondering what seals are all right there that could be causing it. Is there a carrier/axle seal at the chunk on a 14bff. thanks for the help:bow:

There is a seal in the hub. If the hub seal is leaking, you need to take the wheel off, unbolt the axle shaft, get your spindal socket and take off the hub. Then replace the seal and inspect the spindal for damage.

is that the seal on the back side of the hub that sits directly on the spindle? Because that one's fine. It's throwing gear dope all over the outside of the wheel where the hub and axle bolt up. I took the axle out a couple weeks ago because it was doing this same thing just thinking I needed to redo it with some RTV but that didn't work so I didn't know if there's another seal or something I should be looking at

Oh, well then you take the bolts out and use RTV, and bolt it back up.--------There is a seal you can buy.

When you used RTV, did you make sure it was all dry before you let gear oil get to it?

Do you have the steel shim that should be between the axle shaft and the hub?

They make both paper and steel gaskets that go in there. Mine had the paper and I couldn't get them to seal properly, so I replaced them with the steel one from AZ and haven't had a problem since.

well when I first did it I was at my hunting land and the hub prob wasn't that dry. Yes I do have the steel spacer in there and I covered both side of them with RTV. I've got it torn apart right now to do some maintenance and rebuild the chuck so we'll get right this time. Think I got a wheel bearing starting to howl so might as well go ahead and repack/replace them. Prob go back with the red RTV too as if seems to work a little better than the ultra black

well I just put a good bead all the way around. Course I use the "squirt cheese" cans where you just press the little handle on the side and it squirts it out (like squirt cheese), makes it real easy

"gear dope" is this a new type of gear OIL i haven't heard about yet ??

Older and/or British term for sticky goo. WWI aircraft, for instance, had fabric stretched over the frame, right, and it was "doped" (oiled or otherwise treated) for stiffness.

wheel bearings on 14ff dont need to get packed.they are lubed by the gear oil in the diff.if it has been leaking for awhile the oil level in there has probably gone down enough that they havent been gtting lubed.may be need replaced then.seal is on back of hub when yu pull it off.i dont have the metal spacer on my 14ff axle shafts.i just run a beed of black rtv around the edge after cleaning and drying the hub seal serface good and tighten down til snug and wipe away excess rtv.
