Been lurking here for a little while and am finally making my first post

In January bought a 91 K5 with 170,000mi and 40,000mi on a reman 350 and rebuilt trany. 6"lift and 2" body lift. Bought a 83 3/4 ton chassis from a guy for $75 took the 14bff with a gov lok rear and hubs from the 10bolt front end and put them under my K5. While doing this I replaced all bearings and seals and put in 4.88 gears. while setting up the rear had a little over 20"lbs of preload while spinning the pinion bearing and a good pattern on the gears. New u Joints in all drive shafts and front axel and rebuilt the cv.

Took it for its firs test drive today. Nice and quiet while accelerating and maintaining speed, but has a noise while it coasts. the best way to describe it would be a long low pitched rattley duck quack. Removed rear drive shaft and noise goes away. Front runs nice and smooth.

Was reading about similar problems and had things listed such as pinion bearings and u joints as issues. I am hoping it isn't pinion bearing cause with drive shaft out I figured it would be in coast condition all the time. and don't know if it is u joints cause they are all new.

Help.

AHHHHHHHH:angry1:....

Tried squeezing down the rear suspension as far as I could with some ratchet straps still there. (didn't move much stiff springs) checked pinion pre load good on the low end. Tightened it a touch still good on the high end. Checked back lash still .007". re did adjusters on the carrier bearings to make sure they were preloaded correctly resat back lash to .007". Noise still there.

Backed up all the way across the high school parking lot while hitting the breaks to make sure the brake adjusters were adjusted. (people driving by looked at me like I was crazy). Noise still there. seems to have some drive line vibration under acceleration. And the noise does seem to go away or at least get a lot quieter when in 4wd.

Checked the c clip in the np241 transfer case. Clip good. Seems to be a fair amount of play in transfer case chain. I can turn the front drive shaft about 15 to 20 deg and when I checked the chain through the fill hole seemed to have about 3/4 or better slop. and when I opened the fill hole no fluid came out. drained about 1/2 cup of ATF out of it. AHHHHH:angry1:.....

Filled it up with ATF. Jacked it up shook rear wheels. bearings good. Shook front wheels front good. took it for a ride. noise still there. rolled underneath transfer case all wet and looks to have sprayed ATF all over my newly painted rear axle.

Banger head repeatedly on drive way.
Threw tools in the garage.
kicked blazer.
gonna feed my dog and go fishing and drink some beers and try to forget about the heap for a bit.

any suggestions anyone. even some moral support would be welcome at this point. was thinking about rebuilding the transfer case and ditching the 6" lift for a 4". been out of 4 wheeling for about 15 years who has good soft springs so I can get rid of the lumber wagon ride and get at least a little closer to a caddy.

Help:( AHHHHHHH:angry1:......

USA standard gear

At least I had a good time fishing. 6 fish and ran out of beer, worms and cigarettes all at the same time. I apologized to my blazer for kicking it on the way up the drive way.

HA got it.

It ended up being drive line angle. pulled the rear blocks out and quiet as could be. looks kinda goofy with the front 6 inches higher then the back. looks like I am gonna try and find that post with the spring rate of different manufacturers and get me a 4" and ditch the 6".

Still gotta rebuild the transfer case

good bang for buck tuff country . bds best off the shelf.

off road design super custom built packs .

me if 4" go new 5 leaf stock and 4" flip kit for smooth ride and flex .

My USA Standard Gear gears are pretty noisy, and set up properly. This only happens on coasting - it's normal.

:haha: I love it. I can s-o-o-o-o relate to this.

With regards to the 241 leaking ATF, where is the leak at? If its coming from the rear seal, that's an easy fix.

not sure where the leak is at it seems to be some where on the pressure side of the oil pump cause it seems to spray all over the rear axle. Gonna ask my boss at work if he will lay on the ground and i'll drive over him and see if he can see where its coming out at.

I am going to rebuild it any way. there was over 3/4 inch of play in the chain and I have no idea how long it has been running with 1/2 cup of fluid in it. I was so happy when I looked under it when I bought it and saw that transfer case was dry and not stained up. learned my lesson there to check all the fluids even the ones that take tools.
