14BFF under the knife

The axle is a 14bff from a 1986 CUCV. It has about 50,000 miles on it. 4.56's and a Detroit.

I just rolled it under the carport and took off the diff and brakes. The inside of the diff looks great and all of the bearings look good too. I sprayed the whole inside down with brake cleaner - 2 cans - and now I'm waiting for it to dry.

The lip is now shaved. A grinder and a flapper wheel got it smooth and round. No more hanging up. A paint stripper and the flapper got off most of the surface rust. Now its on to the perches....

Everything is apart and there is now beer in the fridge. Assembly will begin as soon as the flat black paint drys.

My wife and kids are out of town for the night and most of the day tomorrow, so I have to get this done. I will work until I am tired, or out of beer, and then I hope to get most of the install out of the way tomorrow.

Its always the little things that are the biggest time killers. I "pressed" the studs back in with the discs on only to find that the nuts for the spacers are just a little bit off. After an hour at searching, I found the right studs. Of course the store I was at only had 5 so I will be off on the hunt this morning.
