Last week I closely checked the pinion housing and saw the outside bearing cage was bent (See 1st photo). Ordered a new bearing and installed it today.

Seems to have made a big difference. The high and low Backlash no longer "moved" teeth. The range I have now is 006 - 009. I'm ok with that.

Did my 1st pattern and it looks good.

Thoughts on the pattern??

ALSO, The pinion carrier has a single steel shim and NO RTV. will the torque on the housing bolts along with the shim effectively Seal it from fluid leaks??

No rtv on that shim. It should seal. Provided everything is clean dry and no maring on mating surfaces

Pattern looks pretty good.
I wouldn't have thought that the little tweak in the cage would effect run out. Good to know.

I was able to fit a feeler Guage around one side on the outside of the bearing with the bent cage. My guess is there was a 001 or 002 open tolerance or a "looseness" on one part of the bearing. Given the Preload there would probably have to be some "play" btwn the rollers and the race.

When I spun the bad bearing there was a definite sound as it rolled.
