Pulling the cover I see mine is pretty wiped out. Ring gear is visibly warn and damaged. Probably 1/4 inch back lash. Gonna replace the ring and pinion, all the bearings and what not. It's got a Gov-Lock in it. What should I look at on it to to ensure it is in good working order, and to ensure some longevity?

prob took out the 3rd pinion bearing support . see this a lot .

the gov-loc on a 14ff is almost full closed unit . there is no real way to look in and clean out with out splitting the carrier .

got a few choices to run it if you can clean it out to your liking .

run it as is . I would not for contamination possible on new parts installed .

get open carrier and install Detroit / lockright / lunchbox locker .

I my self love my gov-loc units on my light wheeled / dd use trucks .

my hard core trucks I have had detroits and now my 1 has arb's in both .

I've glanced over the r&p install on Pirate, and skimmed over the 14 bolt bible there. Will the carrier split with just removing the ring gear?

It just gets drove easy on the street, unless there is snow on the ground, then I tend to throw it around. I do have an L18 496 that will be going in come spring. So with that will come with lots more power and ham fisted use of the throttle at all times. Think the gov lock will hold up?

there is 2 or 3 screws on gov-loc carriers to hold them together . unlike a open diff carrier . so your safe pulling the ring gear .

and have had 1 of my gov-loc units in a 1ton with 38" tsl swampers and built 400 sbc for a few years no problems . its still going to this day in a different axle and truck .

pirate write ups are super . and 14ff is about the best axle to learn on for easy of adjustments .

hardest part is press on/off yoke to pinion. and the crush sleave . but there is now crush sleave eliminators to shim them .

my 1 truck was a 2wd crew cab with 265/75/16 tires . I couldn't belive were it would go with drive tires on the rear and the gov-loc in the rear . and no extra weight in the rear . I live in the snow belt area of upstate ny / finger lakes region so we get snow.

Bought an open carrier off ebay. This is some bull****...

Looks fine to me. You don't need those tiny gears and that other thing anyways....

Just find a detroit for it and be a happy camper.

Detroit is already in the mail, and I know I don't need those parts. I can clean everything up to be fine, but the case was split and the seller knew this was there and was not advertised as being damaged.

Ahh. Good deal. Douchy seller but you will be good to go soon so fock em.

Doing gears as well?

Id do it all, install kits are not that much and peace of mind is a great thing.

All new errthang. Hubs housing and cover are the only things not getting replaced.

I agree that if the item was not as advertised then the price was probably wrong. Have the seller give you a partial refund to keep it or full refund + shipping to return. eBay has all kinds of speed bumps to giving negative feedback, but this is a prime example of where it's appropriate (if they don't make it right).

x2 file a claim . blaten miss rep of item and if he knew it was broken why even ship those parts and list it with them . ? ? ?

I contacted the seller and got a partial refund. He was cool about it.

Installing the new used, open carrier with a new Detroit, and new 3.73 gears (12-45 as opposed to the original 11-41) new pinion and new bearings. Even with the caps loose and the adjusters slopped out the carrier assembly is very hard to turn by hand. You can do it, with two hands.

Pinion rotation torque is 40-45 inch pounds. Spec is 25-35 inch pounds. I know it's tight, but everything is new and will wear in, so I'm not sweating it being a scosh tight.

Turbo 400. Overdrive is in the future. Gear change probably have been a good idea, but this is a repair, not an upgrade. Rebuilding one diff has cost way more than I wanted to spend, two wasn't an option.

Was just curious there not knocking you. I will have to run 3:73 for a bit after the same tire size your running but I do have over drive. Hoping it will be for little time as possible but will have to play by ear.
