I have a 1976 k5 with a 12 bolt rear end and I was going to switch it over to a 14 bolt. I was wondering if I could get a way with not replacing the drive line right now? Is it a must or can a drive it around with the old 12 bolt one? My friend said I would but he wasn't totally sure

The old drive line will work fine, just but a conversion ujoint. You can get them at pretty much any auto parts place. Do a search - the part number has been put up many times in the forums - I just don't have it.

You need Napa PN 348 it's a 1310-1350 combo joint used when swappin' in a 14 for 12...

Just keep in mind that the 14b pinion sticks forward further. This will make the driveshaft seem shorter. If you are lifted with a stock driveshaft, this is actually a good thing.

Actually, it doesnt. They are the same. At least on my 14B and 12B. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

yes, it stick out much farther, which explains my driveshaft having to be shortened 3" during the swap. idk what you are talking about thumper, sorry. i had a 12b too.

There must be a definite answer for this somwhere as to pinion length differences. But going from a '91 10 bolt to a '73 14 bolt, the pinion lenghts were dead on. No driveshaft mods for me. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif
