14bsf 9.5" Disk brake conversion and misc

Anyone have a diagram of how this stuff goes together? I recently came into a 6 lug 14bsf with 4.56s for free, along with a disk brake conversion. I have no idea how this stuff goes together.

Also, does anyone have any type of exploded diagram for the axle itself? I'm fixing to clean this thing up, throw some new seals and bearings in it and put it in hopefully. I need to move the spring mounts and shock mounts. Im going to do some more researching, but I haven't found anything for the disk brakes or the exploded diagram of the axle.
 
Can you post some pics of the disc conversion kit?

I'm not sure why you need an exploded view. Open diff cover, unscrew the bolt and remove the cross-pin. Then pull the C-clips and the axle shafts slide right out. If you're familiar with a 10b or 12b axle, the 14sf has mostly the same parts. They are just bigger.

I'm somewhat familiar with the 10bolts. I should be able to figure it out, but just was curious about an exploded diagram.

So a back story. A friend of mine got this axle from a guy, and it came with the 4.56s and the disk brake conversion. Well this guy was over in Iraq at the time, so his dad helped with the transaction. No instructions for the disk brakes. My friend intended on swapping this into his 01 Z71, but ended up wrecking the truck and destroying the ifs. So for the past 7 months I have been helping him 3 link the front on a dana 60 and a shackle flip in the rear on a sterling 10.5. For helping him, he just gave me this axle since he didn't need it anymore. Still no instructions. He has the drums for it, but I would rather have disks since they were free.

After looking at it more, I think I have most of it figured out with a few exceptions. Here are some pics.

Bracketry with calipers. I for the most part have the brackets figured out. The smaller 2 brackets bolt to the caliper, and the bigger plate bolts to the end of the axle tube. Then the caliper assembly bolts to that. To do this, I have to pull the axleshafts (I believe).
I have no idea what calipers these are. From the bit of research I have done I believe them to be some kind of stock front GM calipers since they have no e-brake provision. They have Delco Moraine stamped on them with some other numbers in various places.

These are 2 thin (1/16") rings. They have to go somewhere around the rotors since they have the lug pattern drilled in them. Have no idea where they go though.

This has the 2 lines from the hardline on the axle to the calipers. Also, I understand the little round things are spacers to space the big bracket out a bit from the axle tube. There are 2 missing because the previous owner had put one bracket on the axle already. I have no idea what the little brackets are for. They have the same shape and bolt pattern as the smaller brackets that bolt to each caliper, but I have no idea where they go. Also, I don't know what the seals go to. I'm assuming the outer axle seals, but that is just a guess.

Finally, I have no idea what the 4 larger washers are for. The 6 lock washers I believe are to lock the bracket to the axle tube, as that is how the other bracket is that is bolted onto the end of the axle.

I think that is it for now. Any help is greatly appreciated.
 
I take it you don't even know the brand of the kit. TSM manufacturing is the only one I know of that makes one for the 6 lug 14sf. That kit does not look like like TSM.

I think those spacers have a purpose. Throw the rotors on the axle an figure how far the backing plate need to go to hold the caliper on the rotor.
 
yeah, I know the spacers are used to move the backing plate thing out far enough. There is already one on the axle, albeit kind of mocked up, and thats how its done.
 
Try throwing the rotor on the end of the axleshaft. It's possible it doesn't quite sit flush on there and the 6-hole ring is a little spacer that goes in there. I doubt it would make any real difference as a wheel spacer.

There are certain kits that put the rotor behind the axleshaft. Hopefully this isn't one of them.
 
How do you tell if its one that puts it behind or in front of?

Also, you think those seals are outer axle seals? They look like it but I have no idea. I guess as a last resort, I can go ask my buddy at the parts store to look them up
 
I would find some brake pads to fit those calipers and then search for instructions for any manufacturer's kit to see if one looks the same. I suspect that certain 14B FF kits could work just by swapping to a 6 lug rotor and maybe adding/deleting a spacer. But you can probably get it done without any instructions.

Then you'll just have to tear things down and assemble to see how it goes together. The kits with the rotor inside the axleshaft are have a little less offset on the brackets. I think it's done mostly because they can't find the right rotor that fits.
 
Ok that works. It also came with the pads, so I guess I'll take them in to the local Oreillys and find out what they are for. I feel like a detective workin a case right now lol

I'm reading about the brakes after doing the disk brake swap and haven't been able to figure out a definitive answer to what to do to keep properly working brakes. My master cylinder is less than a year old, but I'm not sure I'll be able to keep it. Whats the trick to making these brakes work... Elderado MC? Remove PV? Add adjustable PV?

Any help is greatly appreciated

The key to everything is the size of the rear caliper piston. The larger the caliper, the more travel you get from the brake pedal. Also, smaller ones will need less change in the amount of proportioning. I have heard of guys running stock proportioning with the eldorado calipers. I run front calipers on all 4 corners and have a long pedal throw and adjustable prop valve after the stock combo valve.

I've tried some different MC and never found a difference in brake performance, just fluid capacities. Some report "magical" MCs that others don't get the same results from.
 
I would like to get my hands on this kit, I can usually figure crap like this out if I can mess with it for a while. I don't know when I would be able to come down there next, but maybe we could work something out.
 
Just an update. Got the new rear in, brakes and all. Surprisingly didn't have any problems described. A adj. proportioning valve might be a bit useful, but I played around quite a bit, and the rear tires lock up only on hard braking on loose surfaces. I honestly attribute this more to the fact that I have no weight in the rear and upon braking, a huge amount of weight is shifted of the rear tires.
