I have an 85' siverado i just put a 14bsf in i had to replace the pinion seal and axle seals. the pinion seal is leaking already and the axle has a lot of miles on it. i have a d60 from an earlier F-250 lying around in pretty good shape although i think it is geared 3:42 and i would have to find a good 4:10 gear for it as my 3/4t 10b front is 4:10. does anyone know the WMS measurement? or how much different they would be? what about spring pearch width? i'm sure i'd have to change them though its no big deal. would the brakes be too different? this truck is mainly used as a DD and tow rig. thanks- justin

Right off the bat, I'm guessing that your pinion seal problem is because you didn't replace the seal properly. Did you disassemble the diff and use a torque wrench (that measures inch pounds) to assure that the pinion bearing preload is correct? If not, the pinion bearings are probably toast which is causing your leaking seal.

On to your question about the 60. It will have different spring perches and shock mounts, along with smaller shafts. Since its full floating, it will have a higher load capacity which is good since you tow with this truck.

IMO, there are lots of better options than regearing and modifying the 60 to work in your truck. 4.10 is a very common ratio in both SF and FF 14 bolts and you can probably find a whole rear end for cheaper than the cost of a ring and pinion and install kit (assuming you know how to setup gears, installation is another few hundred $$) for the 60.

I wouldn't bother with a D60 rear...

If you really want to replace your rear end go with a 14bff.

And 38377k5 is probably right about the reason why your pinion seal is still leaking. Also make sure the axel vent isn't plugged up with dirt or something.

yeah your probably right about the 14ff i could find one easily for 200$ or less. i guess i was thinking that i might run into the same problem and end up having to rebuild it too, and since i already had the 60... as far as that goes i guess i could just totaly rebuild the sf14. but i would be nice to have the full floater for higher towing cap. and gvw. but really i think that sf14 is all i really need for towing the blazer and trailer ( about 8000lbs) i know where there are some 14bff but they have been sitting awhile.

Got a freebie from a friend and am concerned that most dont recommend it. Its a D60 rear from a 72 3/4 ton chev with a 4.10 gear and posi. My 91 blazer 5.7l is getting a 4" lift with a shackle flip, a D44 front end and 35's. I will drive fairly often and travel from Seattle WA to Hollister Ca and lots of places in between pulling a trailer full of dirtbikes. The D60 needs brakes and seals, spring pads and shock mounts relocated but otherwise appears excellent. Truck had low farm miles on it (48k). Why would I want to over look this and find a 14ff $$$$ not a freebie. This seems to me to be a significant upgrade from my 3.73 10 bolt and did I mention freebie? I will hit alot of logging trails here in WA but dont intend to do any hard core stuff in this rig. So my question is am I thinking wisely or cheaply? Any input appreciated.

The FF rear 60 has the same size shafts as your 10 bolt. Other than that, if it has the gears you want, go nuts.

A FF 14 bolt is stronger in every way compared to a FF 60.

are the shafts the weak point for my intentions and does the labor out way benefit of said freebie? I am not against following advice from the experts (you guys) and could keep looking for the 14ff, just like to spend wisely. If the only thing I gain is the gears Im looking for and no addition beef, well then hmmm. Sounds like a couple hundred bucks for all the work is a no brainer. Im in a serious learning curve at the moment and appreciate the info.

You should be able to find a 4.10 geared FF 14 bolt for $200 or less.

You will probably be okay with either, but if you ever go bigger than 35" tires you will wish you had the 14 bolt. At 35's you're probably maxing you that dana 60; a 14 bolt is good to at least 44's.

Both will handle the towing duty fine.
