14ff, cast steel or iron?

Pumpkin is cast steel.

Let me edit that by saying I'm 90% sure they're cast steel.

Fact, I do remembering welding on one and it is cast steel. Welded a tab onto one for lifting it with a hoist. It's still holding today. Welded OK. Like cast steel does. Cast Iron No chance.

What do you need to weld to it? You can weld to cast iron if you do it right with the right welding rods and procedure. Rene (TRusty) would be able to give you good insite on it I bet.

I have welded to mine with a flux core Mig welder. Nothing super structural but it is holding sofar.

i need to plate the bottom.

Get some high nickel content rod ment for welding on cast iron and buzz it on.

the older 14FF are "Ductile"cast iron, which is weldable. the newer version, 88' and up with the ribbed center section is also cast iron, but its "Gray" cast iron. not weldable. Ductile cast iron will weld ok to good with the right rod, but its still cast iron. still is nothing like steel. If your shaving the bottom for clearence and plating it, and turning the ring gear down, it should hold up fine IF you do it right. preheat the center section, have everything VERY clean and free of gear oil, no rust or dirt. You dont want any porosity in the welds. weld inside and out side of the plate. add gussets to the inside if there is room.

I'd agree with Ductile cast. Cast Iron (grey) would crack like a sumbitch. Flux Core or MIG should do just fine.

so not too hijack or anything but how about the knuckles and Cs on a 44 and 60 I welded a steering arm onto a 44 knuckle that had all three studs broke, I just didn't know they were broke the weld was for insurance but ended up holding it on for a couple years so I assume ductile iron on those too.

correct

First clue is if you see they were welded from the factory. "C"'s are welded to the tube...ergo it must be a weldable cast.

Take a junk T-case adaptor and weld something to it, then examine the end result and you'll see that it's pretty obvious when you're dealing with grey cast. Grey cast is good for certain things like engine blocks...but not so great for things like knuckles and steering arms. It' strong, but brittle. Ductile cast is a lot tougher without the brittleness.
