I just picked up a set of one tons. I was told they are out of a 87 military truck with 38000 mi., 4:56 gears and the rear has a detroit. I pulled the diff cover and see a stock carrier. If I grab the pinion flange and turn slowly I can feel the backlash, then at about a 1/4 turn it stops again. Theres something in there but i thought a detroit was also a replacement carrier. How can I tell without disassembly?

On a 14ff the detroit goes inside of the factoty carrier. If you can move the pinion 1/4 turn i'm sure it's a detroit as that's what the directions said would happen when i installed mine. Try turn a wheel and see if the opposite wheel turns the same direction.

A detroit for a 14 bolt FF goes inside an open carrier. Open Carriers have 4 cross pins, gov locks have 3. Spin one drum and if the other side turns the same direction its locked.

sweetk30 thanks for the info. Thats exactly what i was looking for.
I did try searching first.
Again thanks

Its a Detroit, I can see the springs through the carrier window.:D:D:D
