I have a 90 V30 crewcab SRW with factory 4.10/posi. I'm assuming this is a gov lock? Anyway, I'm taking the 454/auto out as soon as I can sell it and putting a 6bt Cummins/NV4500 in its place. The Cummins will have at least 250 hp/650 ft lbs, probably more. The rear has a bit of play in it now, I'll probably have to rebuild the posi unit sooner than later, and I also want to regear to something numerically lower. The truck only has 88K one owner miles on it. Is the Cummins going to just break another gov lock, especially towing and w/ 35's? I have a few Dodge SRW dana 70's, already w/ 3.54 gears. One has a power lok, one has lock rights. Would I be better off just swapping in one of those? Thanks

I wasn't going to chime in since I've never actually dealt with a 14 bolt gov lok but:

I've never seen or heard of one breaking. They supposedly have a much better reputation than the other gov-loks.

Also realize that the current diesel trucks that are putting out 650 ft. lbs. use either dana 80 or AAM 11.5" rear ends (a step bigger than a FF 14 bolt). Your diesel could be capable of killing that 14 bolt depending on how much you tow and how hard you are on it.

My truck only has 88K on it and has a ton of slop in it(proabably 1/4 turn of slop), thats what concerns me. I have way more experience w/ firstgen Dodges, even beat up old ranch trucks have 200-250K on them before they get this bad, and those are 5 speed diesels hauling stock trailers, etc. My truck was used relatively lightly compared to that, plus its auto which makes it easier on parts. Just wondering what to expect out of it, trying to decide whether to throw a Dana 70 in the back or not.

The 14 bolt is going to hold up better than a dana 70.

The 1/4 turn sounds like a detroit actually. I would pop the cover, take a picture and post up here.
