Getting ready to swap a van width 14 bolt into my rig. Is there better hub/axle seals than others? My old 14 bolt seemed to go through them about once a year. I'd spend a little extra to get a better seal if there's one out there. I hate it when the 90 weight gets 'slung' all over the inside of the tire.

Thanks for any advice.

I have one that is leaking too. I think the short life has more to do with the condition of the spindle than the seal itself.

I've always used ultra grey on all of our trucks and they never leak a drop. I keep the mating surfaces clean though.

Are you asking about the hub seal or the axle flange seal? I use a National brand hub seal and for the axle flange seal i use whatever brand shim gasket they have and i use Ultra black RTV on both sides of it and make sure the axle flange and the hub surface are clean and free of any knick or burrs. Also IIRC the axle flange bolts torque to 115 ft/lbs.

i have timken hub seals.have been fine for a few years so far.i just use black rtv on the hub flange seal.

the spindle surface has to be perfect or you will eat up inner hub seals...My truck does this all the time. my guess is he is talking about the inner seal that rides on the spindle since he mentioned gear oil on the inside of the tire.

Axle flange seal you should machine for an o-ring never leak again,as for the hub seal, no all are the same. Your hub is to rough to keep a seal.

Thanks. Yeah I was talking about the 'inner' hub seal. I was just wondering if some brands were better than others.
