can i pull it out and put a new gasket/RTV on there??? or would that mess up the pattern of the gears???? i am having some ghey ass vibrations/shakes above 30mph also...could the bearing be worn out/out of specs???? and could that be causing this???? if so, how difficult is it to replace that bearing? do i need to setup the gears again?

thanks guys

There is a seal around the pinion which is the likely culprit for the leaks. Do NOT use RTV around the removable pinion assembly; there is likely a metal shim there, which is not a gasket, and sets pinion depth for the gears.

In theory you should be able to remove the assembly, replace the seal, using a new crush sleeve, and put it back in without resetting the gears. I replaced the seal on mine, however, and at the least the backlash is all wrong, so something else went on when I did this :dunno:

If it is indeed leaking around the pinion support where the shims are you can take it apart and spray a coat of gasket adhesive on each surface and it will seal it up and not effect the pinion depth enough to mess with your pattern.

Most likely it is your pinion seal as mentioned above.

they leak thru the splines on the yoke sometimes, i put this white crap the dealer uses on the factory yokes on mine and it works great.

i normally count the treads on the pinion nut when doing seals, new 14bolts dont have a removable pinion support. But if you put it back like it was to begin with should be no harm no foul.

hmm....well, i was thinking of going to 5.13 gears anyways in a month or two. do you think i could just live with this leak as long as i keep adding fluid to the axle??? will it hurt anything else??? or should i just go ahead and try to replace it???? thanks.

If it is actually leaking between the pinion support and the housing, just unbolt the pinion support, clean everything really well (including the shims, making sure not to bend them) and the reinstall. It shouldn't leak, that surface isn't supposed to need any kind of sealant.

I would just live with it.

That's pretty dangerous IMO. Every manual I have ever seen says that you must replace the pinion nut every time it comes off. They are locking nuts and meant to be used once.

I have personally seen three (reused) pinion nuts back off and destroy the ring and pinion.

Do it the right way (with a torque wrench that measures inch pounds) or don't do it at all.
