I want to switch from a strap style rear yoke on my 14ff to a U bolt style. I have the yoke, do I need a shop to do this?

A yolk won’t hold up, you’ll need a yoke!
I think a few have R&R a yoke to replace the seal without issue
There is a crush sleeve in there that is supposed to be replaced upon yoke removal.

Setting the pinion nut torque on a used crush sleeve it a "feel" kinda thing.
New crush sleeve needs @325 ft pd to do.
If you go with crush sleeve elleminator, job is cake.

One way to do it and be as sure as you can is to take the whole pinion support out. Feel what it feels like to rotate the pinion support on the bench. How much drag it has. When it’s on the bench it’s much like a wheel bearing. Then just hope you have good memory on what it felt like when you hit the new yoke.

Or just take it all apart and do a solid spacer and shims if you’re more confident messing with that.

Just swap it. Yes there is a crush sleeve, yes you can replace it, yes a crush sleeve eliminator kit is a thing, yes a shop could do it for you. I have swapped several over the years when I needed different u joint sizes or damaged a yoke and have never had an issue.

I have done seals by feel only on rotational drag using an impact. The killer here is if you get it too tight you cannot back it back off, the sleeve has been crushed too much and backing it off will mean no/not enough bearing preload. Also note sneaking up on the rotational drag happens really darn fast and it's easy to over-do it, especially with the power of the modern battery impacts. Go really slow, one or two ugga duggas, check drag repeat/etc.
