I searched and couldn't find this info. Does anyone know if you can put 6 lug 88-98 axle shafts in an 85 14 bolt Semi-floater?

Generally speaking...."maybe".

I did this and at the end of the day, it did not work out for me. I swapped over the 6-lug axle shafts and the 6-lug backing plates (with drums).

Everything came together nicely but the drums rubbed on the backing plate when I spun the wheels. It was "SO CLOSE" but rubbed just a little. After looking into it further, I think there are a few different lengths of axle shafts and a couple that were only a few fractions of an inch difference. So maybe that was my problem. I looked on Randy's Ring and Pinion for different axle shaft lengths.

You might get lucky and get the correct clearance......just don't know. Everything did go together well, I was just a fraction too short. I probably could have added a very small spacer between the axle shaft and the brake drum to make it work but I'd rather have one complete, working one vs. piece-mealing it together.

Just my experience and others might have made it work without any problems.

I was also aiming towards the more narrow axles (2wd models) so the wider axle may be different as well.

What search terms were you using? I'm sure there are 20+ threads.

It's probably easier if you also want to go disc brake at the same time. You can tweak the spacer to match once you have everything else picked out. Or you can just move the brake mount bracket on the axle tube if you have a welder. Then you can make almost any drum or disc setup work.
