$150 bux a point? Is that good? (roll cage topic)

Local race shop said they will do a cage at $150bux a point. i.e. 6 point cage would be 900bux. I have no intent in buying a bender, welder and materials. This will be a one time deal. This is for mild steel. For Chromoly its $300bux per point, guess I wont be going chromoly. lol.

What type of tube DOM, or HREW? To the frame of to the body?
 
Not sure on the tubing, they just said mild steel. They said since ive got a full frame, they would tie into that thru the body and then seal it up. Good idea?

There's that way or from the body sandwich plates you extend tube from the bottom plate to the frame somewhere. Its more work, some might say not as strong as directly to the frame. Do you want it removable at all? Do you get to design it or do you just turn the truck over to them and you get what you get?

If they go to the frame are they welding it or bolting it?

Im doing my cage to the budy with plates then as I said from the backing plates to the frame. If I want to pull it out for paint or powdercoat I can.

THe shop will do any design I want, providing it wont look stupid (this was their words) this is a major fab shop in town that builds for alot of race teams locally. THeir reputation is out there and they wont put out shoddy work (their words also). So that made me feel good that they will only put out a quality product.

They said they have a basic design, but I can modify it etc. Ive got some planning for sure. I want to replace my seats, but dont know if ill just do a reg. mount to the floor or do cage type. Im thinking of just making it simple and keep the seat out of the cage design.

If your doing a cage do the seats to the cage for sure. Copy pics of cages you have liked and show them some designs, that will help. Think about some of the pros and cons of the type of mounting points you have to choose from, this might help you/them decide the best route. As you know, Triangulation, triangulation, triangulation. Gussets are inportant too.
 
As said by rdn above, I would tie the seats to the cage especially of you don't tie the cage to the frame. My seats are mounted to the tub and the cage is too. My K5 is driven mostly on the street and occasionally on the HWY and it makes me quite nervous when I'm on the HWY because if I do get in a high speed crash there is a good chance that the cage will rip out and I'm bolted to the tub with no protection. At low speed on the trail I'm not to worried about a low speed flop on my side or top. I'd rather tumble around in a crash bolted to the cage than be bolted to the tub. This is one thing on my priority list once my divorce is final and the house sells.
