Got a 1996 1500 diesel 4x4 Suburban this past weekend with 8 lug wheels. I also posted about it in the GM diesel section but thought this question would be better here.

The rotors a shot. Looks like it has 2500 running gear, (or some combination). So I guess I have to remove the hub to get the rotor off.
Any advice?
Do I need to get any seals or anything else to do this?
How do I set preload when re-installing?

Thanks in advance:D

Dealership said everything's basically 3/4 ton. The brakes are like any 3/4 ton truck. You must remove the hub/rotor assembly through the 4 15mm bolts on the back of the steering knuckle. Then you will have lots of fun trying to separate the hub/rotor assembly from the knuckle:angry1:. Then pound out studs, replace rotors, pound studs back in. Torque 15mm bolts to 133 ft. lb. Torque spindle nut to 177 ft. lb. BEFORE putting weight of vehicle on wheel.

Break spindle nut loose with hand dandy 3/4" sockets from HF. Spindle nut is supposed to be 34mm but I used a 1 3/8" socket.

Get calipers outta the way. The key to accessing these bolts is turning the wheel. BTW that cheesy rattle gun wouldn't break them loose:haha:After the bolts came out I used hammer, prybar and foul language to seperate hub/rotor assy.

Knock out studs.

Knok hub away from rotor.

On the bench for cleaning/inspection. Woulda liked new bearings but don't have the $150-$200 per side.

Seal was still nice and flexable. Cleaned bearing/seal and coated with grease. Wire brush and Anti seized the mating faces of hub.

Again with spindle, seal and knuckle. Pretty dang small knuckles after getting used to a D60.

Enjoy smooth braking! I used blue loctite on the spindle nut.

Hope this helps somebody as I found the 1500 8-lug confusing at first:laugh:
