16\" vs. 16.5\"

i'm getting new tires and wheels, but have a question on rim size. is there any preference on 16" or 16.5" Is it true that the 16.5's wont do well with a low psi - like around 10 or so (for sand dunes)?? i thought i heard that they would pop a beed easier? or is that wrong? any other info between the two would be great!

thanks
josh

Re: 16

You are correct. But you will get the most info from doing a search on wheels and other key numbers or letters.

We discuss this once or twice a month.......

Re: 16

NP. 16.5 is a dying size. We will see more sizes and brands for 16" everyday.

What wheels and tires are you looking at?

Re: 16

I have heard that they may discontinue the 16.5 wheel cuz so many people are running 16.5 wheels with 16 tires. Apparently, lots of people are getting in accidents running that combo.

Stuck is a state of mind!

I just wish Interco made more Swamper SX's in 16 inchers.

Re: 16

Yea, they've got to make 18 new different tire designs, but they aren't introducing any new sizes in the old designs.

yes, 16.5" will pop a bead at that lower psi.
You'd have to go hummer style wheels with the inner beadlocks or I know there is a company in California that sells sort of an inner tube that will beadlock a 16.5" wheel ( i don't remember their name now). They are not cheap though.

Re: 16

Oh yeah. And I am sure it will take a long while. Nothing about the automotive industry moves quick - sometimes a good thing.

Also I would have gone 15" over the other 2 sizes except for the grinding of my calipers. I am happy with my choice - I like the larger wheel look even if it means more exposure to trail hazards. Thats why I hope 5 will be enough. And now I am encouraging the people I wheel with to get the 16" 8 lugs so I have even more spares. LOL
