My buddy got a good deal on a set of BFG tires, but they came with 5 lug wheels. He wants a cheap wheel that he can use on his K5, but upon calling a big name warehouse, they told him that a 16" wheel will hit his tie rods?? I called BS on that, but wanted to ask you guys.

Personally, I went from 15" wheels to 17", so I have no first hand experience with what fits in the 16" range. Will a 16" wheel fit up to a certain backspacing? Thoughts?

Thanks!

The kicker is not just diameter, but backspacing.

Seems to me that most any 16" wheel would clear the stock axles, but maybe if they were really deep. :dunno:

Be nice to know which axles (stock stuff?) and how deep the wheels in question are. If said warehouse is saying *all* 16" wheels won't fit, hang up and find somebody who isn't an idiot.

i have never ever heard of that, possibly if u put H1 rims on it without recentering them  my brother and about 3 friends have 16x10 rims with about 4" backspacing with no issues

my 17" H2's are really close to the tierod, like within 1/2 an inch, those are something like 5.25" backspacing or something? It's pretty much in the back spacing. The 15's I ran before these were 3.5" backspacing and were nowhere near it.

It's a Mid-80s Military Blazer. So far, he has a 3 inch lift and that's it. 6 lug axles, but not sure which ones. I think the guy on the phone was nervous that he wanted 16x10 Rims. I thought he wanted a 8 inch rim originally, but he now wants a 10 inch one.

Has anyone here run a 16x10 wheel with 4 inch backspacing on half ton axles?

That's a M1009, it'll have 10-bolts both ends.

That's a wiiide wheel, and a tire big enough to warrant that ... is gonna snap those 10-bolts without too much effort.

Well, maybe they'd live. The 6.2 isn't all that powerful, and the 3.08:1 stock gears don't help. :haha:

How big a tire is he thinkin'?

Good points... I'll try and get him to use a 16x8. That should help any interference with the tie rods. He's looking for something in the 33 to 35 inch range.

I run 16"x8" with 35's and no problems. I think when you go with a 16"x10" with a 14.5" wide tire you end up with some issues like the tire rubbing the frame or some sort of thing.

Either would come in about a 12.5" width, for which IIRC the tire manufacturers recommend an 8" rim. I think a 10" rim *might* seat okay, but would be, I donno, weird and squishy?

I ran 15x10s on my truck with 36x12.5 TSLs. Although this doesnt answer your questions about the tie rods I will say that I felt those wheels were way too wide.

I run a 7in wide wheel with an 11in wide tire now and think its perfect. The lip of my rim always seemed stuck out like a sore thumb with the 15x10s and a 12.5 tire.

Keep it with 4" of backspacing or less and he'll be fine. Stock on these trucks was 3.5-4" of backspacing.

I have 33x12.5R16's on 16x8's with 4" of backspacing and there's plenty of clearance.
