This is an update of the pickup I have for sale in the classifieds. This is my mom's pickup and she lives in a town of 90 people in Western Nebraska, and the next big town, 1200 people is 30 miles away, so she couldn't find a mechanic to work in this for her. I Just brought it back to Alabama with me and it looks like the reverse detent in the transmission has lost its C clip, which only allows 1st and 2nd gear. She has asked me to fix it and sell it, and the more I dig into this thing it seems like a rare bird. Factory 292 and 4 speed, but it has a 250 now, short bed stepside and its the plain model as far as options go, from what I can google there were between 1200-1700 of these made and those numbers came from various sources.

I plan on pulling the transmission and fixing it, removing the cab lights, all the grab handles (she is 4'10") the LMC chrome doo dads, grille, , and maybe pulling the 2" body lift off and then putting it back up for sale. What do you all think about it? I do not like shortbeds and the only step side I can tolerate is a 1957 and prior so I have no desire to buy it.

are you going to fill in all the holes from the cab lights and grab handles? if not, I would say leave it. if I was to come look at it I would wonder why it has so many holes all over. by leaving them it answers the questions and they can take them off. I would wonder how long the holes had been sitting open

My semi professional opinion is sell it as/is. That is a late 70s early 80s time capsule and many people {myself included} would prefer it the way it is. The grab handle on the glove box is probably the only thing I can see as a true minus. I am assuming it has an SM 420 transmission and a divorced Rockwell t-case?
Interesting it has the CST style chrome trim around the back window and windshield and the cargo light but neither one shows up on the SPID. The switch for the cargo light was by the drivers left shoulder on the b piller from the factory.
EDIT: Also the passenger door mirror would have been an option I think.

It has a lot of added things like a chrome grille panel but not the sides, all the added junk is a turn off to me but I’m just the mechanic and salesman so I’m trying to stay emotionally unavailable for it. I need to check on the trans and transfer case and comb over it more this week. The turning radius is horrible and there are stop bolts welded to the axle tube which I’m sure aren’t stock. I guess they added them to keep the tires from rubbing?

Living in New England with our salty snowy roads . .

That short bed truck is a real find.

Don't touch it....sell it just the way you found it.

I really don't mind the accessories, except maybe the nerf bars.

edit, didn't see the handle on the glove box door that has to go, ugly as sin and if anyone used it for an "O Jesus handle" the latch would fail

Stop bolts may be stock, mine had them. But of course they could have added others as well.

Leave it as is and sell it. Yeah, the future buyer is going to want to remove most of that stuff too, but it isn't going to lower the price, so why put in the work? Also, as been mentioned, you are opening yourself up to explaining a bunch of holes, and/or repairing them. Again, for no extra money.

I wouldn't touch anything that doesn't help make it mechanically sound.

Once I get the transmission fixed I’ll let you know. I’m going to use it for my daily driver for a week or two to shake it down and see what all it needs.

Not sure I would take the cab lights or grab handles off? A lot of people like me would really appreciate those. Also, a buyer could always take them off if they don’t like them. How much you think you’ll ask?

I’m going to leave it as is now, like every says its more work and it opens holes in the sheet metal and its not mine so I need to stop trying to make it that way. I’m posting it for $17,000 locally and will take $14,000 from anyone on here. I know thats going back on my 10k list but I severely underestimated what we had.

I saw this when it was first posted and it hurt me deeply but I am content with the L/C.

The trans should be a SM465 ( first year offered for production is 1968 ) and married to the Rockwell case ( only year offered adapter item and pretty damn rare too ) - the NP205 showed up in 69 as well as the Dana20 in some real base models.

I think you are right in asking for more money on this ride - it’s got some one year only components and is in pretty good shape for a survivor type of ride.

Just an opinion - loose the glove box handle and those nerf bars just have gotta go ! Leave the rest alone for the next buyer to decide what stays or goes.

Really cool truck - hope it sells for crazy money for ya’ !
