As far as I can tell theres alot of diffrent ways to convert sm465 to nv4500.
Here is the run down of my project.
3/4ton axle swap maybe by end of summer.
Replacing 4" lift 33x12.5 swampers to 8" lift 38x12.5' tsl sx's
Replacing wore out 350 with a vortec 383 stroker hyd roller cam with a FAST ez injection. Engine is built & ready to install while getting ready to install the engine I thought a 5 speed w/a hyd clutch would be sweet, so I started doing a little research. And I'm as confused now as before.

I picked up a gm pre 96 nv4500 for 4x4 minus bellhousing that needs gone thru for $100
I have 2 np205's 1 is coupled to a th350 & the other is coupled to sm465 both in good condition.
looking for some input from someone whos done this swap in this vintage truck. what they did & what they maybe would have done diffrent, part #'s??? best place to buy the parts??? would all be sweet.
I was told that this is "THE PLACE" to find what I need.

in our 67-72 section lots of guys have write up on this.

i think you have to be a paid member tho to see.

friendly site here and worth its weight in gold.

I can help a little since I did he swap in my 71.

Since the trans is a 32 spline output, you need a transfer case with 32 spline input. That means a np205 that came behind a th400, convert the 205 you have now to 32 spline input, or I think a np208 or np241 is also 32 spline. There's adaptors that can be used as well, but I don't know much about them.

The trans is also longer than most others of that year so you gotta move the rear crossmember back (along with new driveshafts) or move the engine forward.

Give advanced adaptors a ring. They have kits that can help.

Is the np208 a gear drive t-case with a slip yoke? I belive my dad has one that came as spare parts with a 81 chev with a 4-speed.

do a 205 or a 241. skip the 208 kind of a weak case .

and 203 / 208 / 241 = chain drive.

205 is the gear to gear monstor.

so relating to cost, would I be better off to convert one of my 205 to the correct spline input or are the th400 205 plentiful enough that a guy could find one to trade?

full stip of the 205 tcase. machine the input bearing hole to fit bigger bearing needed for 32 spline input.

get 32 spline input you ned. i am not sure if its long or shourt for your setup.

re assemble and all done.

i would prob look for a tcase first if not in a hurry. and its 85-up that will fit to match the round 6 bolt pattern of the 4500
