So i have been fooling around with the XJ steering shaft upgrade and been having all sorts of fun trying to figure out the double splined issues. 72s have a splined column and a larger splined steering box i believe. Question is what are peoples solutions? im stumped without butchering the old splined connectors and welding them on. Any suggestions? Ive scoured the internet:confused:

I didn't do the J$&p parts, instead I bought a chunk of double d steering shaft and a u joint style joint to replaced the rag.
I removed the upper section of the factory shaft to apply it to the double d and cut it to length before installing the new ioint

Where did you buy the U-joint and do you know the spline count on the steering box and column? How crazy is the cut and weld idea? It shouldnt be under too much load right?

You can get brand new parts that don't need welding from borgeson or another place I forget the name of.

Big question is: are you a skilled enough welder to trust your life with it when you're done?

I procured all said things from a speed shop here in town that also build hot rods. As i pulled the broken rag joint out, i pulled the box and shaft with it, but it was not my DD.

I second that about the welding of the shaft/any steering component. Dont take this the wrong way or being rude, but you sound like you are second guessing it, so I would reconsider.

What up man, how you been?

You can cut off the upper XJ joint and put another joint on. They are installed with set screws and jam nuts. Works ok but once you get the length right, weld the joint to the shaft. Not hard and totally safe since the shaft wont spin inside the joint.

Check eBay for joints, maybe start with CPP and search from there

If the steering box side is still wrong, consider changing to a newer box if you haven't gotten the current one recently rebuilt.

Found the joint in the garage from when i used the 72 box. The replacement joint was made by a company named Flaming River

Just out of curiosity's sake, what improvement is the XJ upgrade from stock?:dunno:
