1972 Camaro

I looked at a car for sale yesterday. I need something to drive while I work on my daily driver. It's a 1972 Camaro with a built 454 with about 5,000 miles on it. It has a perfect body with a new paint job. The interior is OK, but needs a headliner and some interior panels. The rear tires have about half tread on them, the fronts have about 75 percent. He's asking $8,000. Is the 454 overkill, should I just look for something with a 350? Do you think it's worth the money? The only exterior problems are the missing bumpers, driver's side door lock, and one marker light. Thanks for the help.

I wouldn't say the 454 is overkill, but what the heck does he have in that motor? 8G's sounds a bit steep for a car that is missing bumpers and stuff. But definetly a sweet ride. Makes me miss my old 70 1/2 Z28 just thinking about a 70-73 Camaro.

I left out a little info. The reason he wants so much is this: He said that he spent over 5,000 on the engine. The car has a new paint job that is less than 2 months old, it's silver with a black racing stripe. The reason that the bumpers, marker lights etc are missing is because he was going to replace them with new ones after the paint job, but never got around to it, so he was just driving it to work and locking it in the garage when he got there (he's a mechanic). I still think it may cost a little too much to replace all of the missing chrome and accessories, but it looks sweet.

determining the "dollar value" of these cars is becoming harder and harder, my first question is "what's under that fresh paint job" if everything is done "right" that is a very fair price, you probably could not find a '72 camaro and do what he has done to that one for $8000, if it is everything he says. you also have to consider the options and originality of the car, is it an "SS", "RS", "Z-28" ? If you plan to buy one of these cars do some research on your own, ask the owner a lot of questions before deciding. It's not unusual for guys to start a project, sink a lot of money in it, then sell it for less because they are tired of it. just be sure what you're getting before you buy it.

Man $8000.00 dollars!!! Money like that that should put you in a nice mid 10sec to 9sec ride depending on year, not to be rude. $11,000 and I can set you in a mid low 10 high 9sec blown 427, 67, RS/SS not with a little work ready to paint. That is what a friend of mine priced his for. He has a new found love for it now, but hold on and he'll get mad and it will be for sell again, and if someone showed him aboutn that same amount you would be lucky not to have to load it right then. looked great for the first 6 months...the bubbles a year later make me wonder how much was actually spent on the paintjob

but my friend has a 72, he smokes it all the time with a zz4, 454 would be awesome

Hey for 3,000 I got my Firebird (Pontiac 350) into traction limiting 11.10s. With a new set of rear springs(has original springs in it) it shoud run in the mid to low 10s by MPH. And my car weighs 3550 with me in it. Its also a street daily driven vehicle.
