I have searched and cannot find a thread on replacing these seals...I don't see any youtube videos on it either.

Has anyone torn these down, removing the rivets and replaced them?

I don't have a choice, they are cracked, split or missing chunks...

before I bash you I will try a search, but I am sure there was at least one thread about it, I was reading it here about a year ago.
It's not easy and some say after getting it done that it wasn't worth the hassle, but it's being done.
On to try and search...

I found a few posts which never arrived at an answer

Guess I am in uncharted waters....a fitting place for the Chief of Amity Police...
Where would I get a block of steel that will fit inside the vent frame that I can use as an anvil for setting rivets? It needs to go in the window channel...almost 1/2" thick...

Oh well I could look deeper I remember reading all the details but it was at least a year ago.
As for the anvil part, if you were here, I have plenty of scrap you could use for that.
It doesn't have to be 1/2", a 1/4" stock would work fine.
I have even use a chisel ( I have a really big one) :D

If I knew the right keywords it I could probably find it...but I figure the rivets have to come out...I am not sure which piece needs to go in first...maybe that will become evident....
But the rivets need to be set and I don't have a bench or a vice...

I believe you don't need to remove the rivets...

here you go:

Thanks, but they still don't come to a consensus...the guy who started the thread removed the rivets...another guy said he didn't have to but couldn't remember how he did it...

I personally don't see how it can be done without removing the rivets...the back straight strip has to fit into the front piece...the only way to get that to happen is to take the frame apart, install the rubber pieces, then rivet it back together...

You gotta remove the rivets. I've done it twice on my 68 and they haven't changed it on the later models. Also pop rivets work easier than the original style.

I figured it out...I got the new front piece on but the rear piece doesn't match up where they drilled the rivet holes...I will either have to reuse the original back strip or drill new holes in the new one and patch the holes they drilled with black rtv...
I can't set the rivets until I get a backing plate anyway...

It just sucks how bad the quality of this crap is these days...can't even get the rivet holes in the right place...

I wonder if the orientals build their military stuff this bad...with tolerances being off like that I doubt they would last a day....

Vent Window Weatherstrip Install

Here's what I figured out so far:

1. Drill out the 4 rivets holding the rear straight strip out, this will allow you to remove the rear strip. The top and bottom of that strip inserts into the front piece so you will have to flex it a bit to remove it.

2. Pull the old front piece out.

3. Put the new front piece in starting at the top. Kind of lay it on the channel and get a blunt ended screwdriver and push it into the top corner...not hard enough to go through the rubber though. Once that is in place, put one side of the rubber "locking strip" into the channel of the frame.
Go to the opposite side and lift up the outer rubber and you will see this side of the "locking strip".
Use the flathead screwdriver and push the locking strip edge down and into the frame channel. This will be slow and tedious...about the width of the screwdriver blade at a time.
Keep working it in until you get it all locked in.

4. Put the straight strip into the top and push and then flex it a bit and stick the bottom in. It will be clear where it goes once you see the other piece installed.

Now you are ready to rivet that strip back in...which I haven't done yet. I have seen a video where a guy puts a thick block of metal in a vice and slips the window channel over it. The brad head will be on that side that the steel block contacts.
You will use a rivet setting tool from the front and lightly tap it with a hammer until the rivet is tight.

I will take pictures when I do the other vent.
