Okay I have completely taken the front hubs apart and repacked the wheel bearings. If I understand correctly the hubs are supposed to disengage when you take them apart. However I can jack the font end up and spin one tire and the other spins with it. Any thoughts?

First, are you jacking the front and the other is spinninf, or is that the rear?
if front, does it spin the opposite way? then you have it in park.
If it spins the same direction, you have a locker.
If it's rear same thing but I am guessing you are asking about the front.
If you put it in neutral and it still does that that means you have a 203 which is full time 4x4 and 74 had 203 only as far as I know but if you are asking maybe you know it's been changed to 205 or modified to part time.

I am jacking up the front end and the rear wheels are still on the ground. I put it in neutral and the front wheels spin the same direction. As far as 203 and 205 what are your referring to? Sorry I am new to 4x4 stuff. There have been no modifications done to the transfer case, transmission, gears, etc.

I don't know if this helps but it is a automatic, and on the transfer case shifter if you pull it back it it is in the 4hi position. And if you push it forward it is in 4low. Just thinking about this now I bet it is a full time 4 wheel drive. It was my grandpas truck but I don't remember him saying it was a full time 4x4. Thanks for the fast response!!!!

he has a NP 205

Nope, he has a 203.
In 73-75 there was no auto with 205, it was always 203, the 205 was offered in 73 and 75 with the manual but 74 was all 203.
If it was never modified it still is 203.
And the fact he said the shifter doesn't show 2wd only 4wd hi and 4wd low that is the 203 pattern.

Thanks for the info guys. Are the kits for the 203 that make it part time any good?

I have one on mine, but I really liked the full time on my 73.
I could sell you mine if you really want part time.
