1974 Jimmy

As was said, remember it will be bare metal and it will rust FAST…..so be prepared for that. Media blasting is better than sand blasting if they offer it

What color was the underside of Jimmys? I assume it was the body color but mine looks like it was black. Did they come with an undercoating? Mine definetly had a black undercoating but even when I sand it off I never hit body color.

Thanks for that. I will make sure to find someone that used media and not sand.

Received catastrophic news today. The block is cracked and one of the two heads is cracked.

I don't know what to do at this point...sigh...

Too bad you're too far from me.
I have a few options for you to pick from.

Although I’m not about the LS swap the world trend, pick up an LS cheap and swap that in. Or pick up a late model L31, plenty of options.

I have 2 L31 engines among these engines, a couple of 454, a 402 and a few 6.x diesels :pimp:

I’m still thinking on what I’m going to do about the engine. My uncle has a host of blocks so I’m going to probably throw another no frills 350 back in it.

In the mean time I purchased a rotisserie. I bought the Redline ROT3000-LD. It will be delivered Friday.

Anyone have experience with them?

Trying to get some Jimmy time in over the Christmas break.

Got the transmission/transfer case installed on the frame. Also go the drive shafts put back on. I suspect the shafts are going to need to be replaced/rebuilt as the teflon coat is gone from both front and rear splines. We will see how much chatter there is.

The frame is almost done. Other than the engine, i think I’ve got everything else bolted on.

Speaking of engine. I think I might go crate 350 and be done with it. Seems that would be easier than finding a block, cleaning the block, building the engine, blah blah blah.

I’ve also got the body on the rotisserie and have started working on the underside. Lots of undercoating to get off and rust to repair.

There is a great YouTuber who is restoring a 75 and is showing all the different parts of the body being repaired.

1000003468.jpgDo you have the plans for the cab stand? For not being very knowledgeable you sure are blowing me out of the water with everything you have done.

No plans. I simply unbolted the 6 frame/cab bolts, jacked up the body off the frame, and built the wood framing underneath. I only made sure to make the front and back corner posts wide enough apart as to be able to pull the frame out from underneath the body.

This was a good solution for getting the body off the chassis. But it was no bueno for working under the body. Hence the rotisserie.

I have started tearing into the body. Eesh, what have I done. So much rust.

I have started with the drivers side rear bed side. I’ve decided I’m going to try to separate the bed from the cab. I’ve got so much rust to fix that I don’t see any other path forward.

So, I took off the front pillar cover. Before that I cut out the front pillar area of the outside panel to see how the jigsaw fits together. It looks like the rear back tailgate post has some welded seems so I need to figure that out. Then this side is off. I’ll do the passenger side next.

I am also 92.6% decided I’m going to have it sandblasted when I’m done disassembling. I was going to grind but I think that is a waste of time.

Its amazing to see how much rust is hiding on the inside parts. Great progress!

Not going to be much left to sandblast you if keep taking all the panels off LOL. Keep up the good work! I'm going the full convertible conversion route because I was scared to get in it as deep as you are with an early full vert. Hard to find an unmolested one of them left that isn't an ate up with rust. Did you see where they're reproducing that b pillar panel now? That'll save you a little bit of fab work if you need it.

Yeah. I bought both left and right. Actually, I’ve purchased every body panel part that is made for a 73-75 Jimmy. Key Parts just released the tailgate and I picked it up on Friday. I wish someone would make a model accurate floor. That really is my only major hurdle.
