Before I go out there and tear into this, what do I need to know about removing the front driveshaft?

If I drop it from the yoke on the back of the pumpkin, how does it come out of the transfer case? It is very busy back there and there is no room because of the crossmember. There is also a double cardan joint.

You sure its got a CV joint?

I had a '74 Jimmy once and tore it apart. It had the same drivetrain like yours. 350/350/203 and I still have both driveshafts. Front was not a CV jointed shaft.

It's got a double u-joint thing near the transfer case...but that's not what I need to know.

What I need to know is do I have to unbolt the 4 bolts that hold the driveshaft to the transfer case or can you just pull it out with some prying?

You need to unbolt it at the T-case. It's not a slip yoke style like a lot of rear shafts. Those bolts at the T-case can be a bear to get to...

'74 should be a yoke rather than a flange at the T-case I think.

Is there any way to spin the shaft to get access to the other bolts? I have 2 of them off...

You should be able to unbolt the driveshaft from the front differential first then put the transfer case in Neutral. You can spin the front driveshaft then and should be able to get to all of the bolts.

no it doesn't seem to want to spin in neutral

Don't think he has lockouts. Full time hubs due to the 203.

No I don't have lockouts, but the front of the shaft is off...so I should be able to turn it with a pry bar?

Will the transfer case spin while in neutral on a 203?

i can spin mine by hand.

try 4hi unlockd and tranny neutral.

Sh*t fire and save matches! I love you man...\

after going and getting a propane torch to heat up and bend my 1/2 inch wrench into a 90 degree angle...your idea did the trick...easy, easy, easy!!!

I have infused the economy for a set of stubby wrenches, propane....and I didn't need to...
