on my 74 k5 i just got i dont have manual locking hubs just a chrome cap i removed it and its just a cover so do i have automatic locking hubs did they come automatic in 74 models

no, autos didn't come along till late 80s. You probably have a 203 TC and full time 4x4. Can you snap a picture? If it's just a cover, doesn't sound like you have any 4x4, like the guts are missing. If it's full time, there should be a big steel gear inside.

yes the guts are there and i do have the gear there so hows it work

there is a spring, cup, gear, and circle clip (however, I'm not familiar with them, there might be more parts, dunno)

all the guts go in, cap goes on. You have full time 4x4, no locking or unlocking. The 203 runs all the time in 4x4, unless you have a part time kit.

I have the same setup on my '74 and as I understand it having full time 4wd causes a lot of wear and tear on the drivetrain. I've seen the setup called a 'ticking time bomb' in a few threads. So to answer your question...I think it's bad for a 40 yr old truck to run full time 4wd. I'm in the middle of doing the mile marker 502 conversion w/hubs to make the truck run in part time 4wd.

If you do decide to do this conversion find a thin walled 1 5/16" socket first. You cannot remove the yoke nut without one.

Here's an informative article on how/why this guy did the conversion to part time. The article also describes your 4wd options before/after the conversion. Very informative.

Here's a link to the conversion kit that includes the hubs. The 501 kit does not include the hubs.

cool thanks for the info and did u do the shaft kit too or just the 502 kit

I considered the shaft kit but once I opened the case and saw how clean it was inside I went with the 502 kit only and reused the existing shaft. The instructions for the kit are a bit lacking and the pictures are black and white so if you have any questions feel free to hit me up, I just completed it this weekend. Pretty easy really...once it was done.

The instructions here on CK5 are pretty good but I still needed to walk away a couple of times to think about it. The yoke nut socket was the first bump in the road but I found one that fit from Autozone.

I posted the part # in this thread

The second issue was figuring out that the existing shaft goes INSIDE the gutted planetary gear ring. The next issue was figuring out where the shims and 3 piece spacer assembly went. Once I figured that out it was done. I also ordered a gasket kit from Cobra Transmissions that contains all the gaskets, seals, and o-rings so I could knock those out while I was there.

Whats that 502 kit do does it make a 203 like a 208? My 77 has a 203 and I put mile marker lockouts on it. It already had warns on it when I got it but one was broke so I got the good stainless ones.
