yes the guts are there and i do have the gear there so hows it workno, autos didn't come along till late 80s. You probably have a 203 TC and full time 4x4. Can you snap a picture? If it's just a cover, doesn't sound like you have any 4x4, like the guts are missing. If it's full time, there should be a big steel gear inside.
ok so is that good or bad and so i assume i still have a low and a high and nuetral stillthere is a spring, cup, gear, and circle clip (however, I'm not familiar with them, there might be more parts, dunno)
all the guts go in, cap goes on. You have full time 4x4, no locking or unlocking. The 203 runs all the time in 4x4, unless you have a part time kit.

cool thanks for the info and did u do the shaft kit too or just the 502 kitI have the same setup on my '74 and as I understand it having full time 4wd causes a lot of wear and tear on the drivetrain. I've seen the setup called a 'ticking time bomb' in a few threads. So to answer your question...I think it's bad for a 40 yr old truck to run full time 4wd. I'm in the middle of doing the mile marker 502 conversion w/hubs to make the truck run in part time 4wd.
If you do decide to do this conversion find a thin walled 1 5/16" socket first. You cannot remove the yoke nut without one.
Here's an informative article on how/why this guy did the conversion to part time. The article also describes your 4wd options before/after the conversion. Very informative.

Here's a link to the conversion kit that includes the hubs. The 501 kit does not include the hubs.
