The 74 came with a 4 bolt 350 2bbl and three on the tree. I was going to put the 350 back in it but the block didn't pass the leakdown. So I decided to go with a swap. There is a running and complete 2005 GMC Yukon with a 6.0 (LQ9) and a 4165 trans. These are AWD. This is my first real post on here so please be gentle. Here are my questions.
1. The AWD is new to me. I've done 7 or 8 K5 and K10's but they've all been old enough to shove the shifter manually into the various modes of 4WD.
a. can I use my stock transfer case with the 4l65
b. is there a benefit to me to switch the K5 over to AWD
c. if I wanted to put the engine/trans/xfer case from the Yukon into the K5 would I need to summon Gandalf or is it doable
2. Getting the whole running donor vehicle seemed to me to be a better approach than piecemeal.
a. is it
b. are there other groovy things on that Yukon that I should consider 'swapping' into the K5

I have a zillion other questions but I'll try not seem lazy with this forum and do my own research. I'm just either buying that Yukon in the morning on not kind of based on what I get back here.
Thanks

First, I am not sure but I believe the awd is a single speed so no low range, unless it's actually auto 4wd then it's not awd.
Either way, your transfer case will not bolt to the transmission of the Yukon.
There are plenty of tcases that are part time that will work with that transmission and some even have a lever if you prefer

I appreciate the information. I think I'll look for a lever type t-case. I have the button on a little Colorado that I'm constantly in and out of 4wd with. I have a lever on my wifes K5 that never goes off road. Somehow to me the lever seems to fit these old trucks,

I also forgot, the front output on this case is driver's side, wrong side for these trucks

Sounds as if my post is possibly late, but I would buy the Yukon!
I would find an older transfer case to put behind the 4L65E and keep the truck part time 4wd.
The wiring and ECM are not a problem, however you will want to decide if you go with factory ECM and such, which would need some programming either by you using HP Tuners, or hace someone else work on it.
This option, I would get an aftermarket harness rather than thinning the OEM harness.
Or you can use Holley Terminator and adjust all of the settings yourself to get it to run the same as the factory, then work up from there to fine tune things. This doesn't require buying credits and software to program the ECM as factory ECM will.

Fantastic information. I really appreciate it! I did buy the Yukon and drove it home. Ran great and shifted smoothly. I’ve gone so far as popping the hood and scratching my head. I’m waiting on a new head for my Colorado then I’ll have the lift open to start pulling the good parts out of the Yukon.
Again, thank you for sorting the transfer case out for me.
