It was installed but never worked and I removed the Speedometer and there was just the cable. I believe there is supposed to be a key on top of the cable. Is there and how do you get it? I may have the same issue on the transfer case so let me know if one is needed there as well. Thanks!

If you mean the metal sleeve "tip" on the end that has squared off edges, those usually come in those universal cable kits (If your only replacing the cable itself).you cut it to length and I think the tip gets crimped on with a tool in the kit you whack with a hammer..

Factory cables may not have a separate tip ,instead the cable itself is squared off at each end where it plugs into the speedometer and transfer case .universal speedomter cable kit.png

Well, Mine seems to have been installed without the male adapter that goes into the speedometer itself and if there is one for the transfer case, that is likely not there either because I drove and watched the bare cable on the dash and it does not spin. Are the adapters available without the cable itself?

Maybe, a speedometer shop might sell them separately ,but probably will cost you more than a kit like the one I pictured above would..

Be sure your cable isn't still the original, those were cut to length and made squared off on each end and dont need those tips ..
Sometimes the square drive thing on the speedometer gets worn out and the cable cant spin it,ditto at the transfer case end..your cable might be broken halfway in the casing also..
You could disconnect it at both ends and spin it with a drill to see if the other end spins--if not it is broken..
