What was used under the 77 3/4 ton pickups?
I know the 14bff was under the rear. What was under the front? Also, anyone have anyidea what the gear ratios would be if the truck came with the granny gear 4-spd?
Thanks

My first truck was a 1978 3/4ton 4x4 Chevy. It had a Dana 44 front and 14 bolt full floater rear granny 4spd and 205 t-case. Stock it had 3.73 gears but i have read numerous cases where they came with 4.10s and even 4.56s.

I was told that chevy made the swap from the d44 to the 10 bolt somwhere around 77 to 79 so it could be either one. Hope that helps.

Get him to look at the front diff for a tag that says the gear ratio. Its a little metal tag prolly bent to hell but you should be able to read it. Then he could tell you what front axle it has also.

Just found out the truck chasis is a 3/4 ton but it has 1 ton axles. Would that be a 14bff and a D60 in front or still a D44?

If they are indeed 1 tons, then yes it would be a 14BFF/D60. But don't always trust what they say, I'm going through the same process right now (different truck though ;))

the 10 bolt didn't show up until 80/81. The 77 would have 14blt and d44 the one I had with the the same drivetrain had 4.10s the 60 is a MUCH bigger axle - and dana axles have the model # cast into them near the diff cover

GM started phasing in the 10b in 80, but some 81's (like mine) still had the D44.

Actually GM began 10b fronts in '77.

GM identified their axles by "first design" and "second design." The year split is right in the middle of '77.

Chevy trucks ran both 10b's and D44's up to '79 in which '80 used all 10b's.

GMC trucks ran both axles in which the D44 was phased out in '82. After that, all GMC's ran 10b's.
