I just purchased a 1977 K5 Cheyenne and this is my first 4WD vehicle, my father had a 1976 Blazer and so we are assuming they both have the same type of transfer case, etc.

This is a dumb question but how do I go from 2WD to 4WD and back? and how do I know if I'm in 2WD or 4WD? I have NEVER driven anything that has 4WD before so I'm afraid of killing the transfer case by doing something wrong.

So far, I've been told to come to a complete stop and put it in neutral...wait a second and put it in low for off road and high for highway/higher speeds (ie snow). To get out of 4WD I've been told to stop, neutral and put it in reverse and back up about 10 feet and you'll hear a clicking noise to know you are now back in 2WD.

My stick isn't marked just dashes so please help educate me people :)
I'm picking this up in the AM and need some advice before up **** something up :eek1:

you pretty much got it...You only need to back up if "sticks" in 4wd...

and lock the hubs if they're manual...:waytogo:

btw, you can use 4W HI off road...like on a solid pack dirt trail and such...you will know when you need 4 LO...

someone else can tell you what t/case you have...my memory isn't that good...

Sounds good, just keep your 4hi speeds below about 40 or 50. If you are going that fast, you don't need 4wd....or should slow down.

Thanks! Yep, I was told that :)

So I have it down it seems, not sure what kind of case this K5 actually has

Just need to know the stick positions and what they correspond to since they don't appear to be marked Hi, lo, etc. so what would all the way forward be and all the way to the rear, etc.?

Also, the K5 has black hubs on the front...

Any help on that part?

you either have a 203 or 205
the 203 is full time 4x4, unless part time kit was installed
the 205 can be shifted 2wd, 4wd
normally, all the way forward is 2wd, BUT that's going off memory and both 208/241 T-cases are like that, but they have different linkage setups

do the hubs have dials? Or are they just a bowl shape, smooth on the ends?

I say, when you get out there to drive it, snap a picture and upload it ASAP (if possible) to update this thread. Someone will see and chime in. About what time? Pacific time zone that is :D

Hold on a second I might have some pics from the auctions...It's coming to me via Passport Transport.

The caps are black, hard to tell since I know NOTHING about these trucks, bought this for my old man and he's having a hard time remembering from all those days of hard 70's partying lol

oh hell!

I just saw that was your first post...Welcome to the best damn GM truck site on the planet...:thumb:

it's hard to say what t/c case is on something that old...the case should have a tag on it, crawl up under there and see what it is...better get used to crawling around now :thumb:

re: the hubs, if they look like this they're manual...

these are auto hubs...(junk)

damn! 6 post while I was typing...:haha:

you have custom wheels, can't tell from the pics

Ray,

Are those black things just covers for the hubs? Or what the hell are they?

My main concerns are:

When this K5 comes in, How do I tell if I'm in 4WD or 2WD? What posistion should the stick be in (ie forward or back)???

I'm confused sh*tless and afraid I'll harm the Jimmy, a friend who is a mechanic can put it own a lift and tell me the tag info since I'm in no shape to crawl lol

I'm 99.999% sure 2wd is all the way forward...(if it's a 208 or 241)
and relax! It's tougher than you think :pimp:

from the pics, the black things look like covers for those fancy wheels. we'll get you through it when it gets to you! :waytogo:
