8 miles from Moab I had a complete and utter failure of both headlights, as I am passing a semi. The end result is that we have squatted on a patch of land until daylight comes. See you guys tomorrow, hopefully.

Once in my '56 Chevy truck, some of the wires under the dash melted against the amp meter main feed 8 gauge unfused wire and they glowed orange, and the truck stalled, all the lights quit too--I guess back then they just used the wires as fusible links?..all I had for a fire extinquisher was a bucket in the bed that happened to have rainwater in it,only a quart...but it put out the wire fire..

I had to take off the battery cable ,luckily I usually leave the ground one just "twisted" on,not tightened with a wrench on top post batteries..(this is when one of those battery dissconnect switches would be handy!)..
I found the wires under the dash that melted to the main feed and separated them ,most had only some crispy ash for insulation!..:doah:

Anyway,in order to get the rest of the way home,I had to rip off wires from my stepside tail lamps and strip it with my teeth, and hot wire the coil and one headlamp to the battery, and jumped the solenoid to crank it over (it was a straight six so that was easy)..

I made the 15 mile trip home on back roads ,slow, but safe...but I was paranoid the whole way, thinking that the wires under the dash might decide to flare up again!..
I now keep jumper cables and jumper wires in my "on board" tool kit, along with a spool of wire and some terminals...ever since I started carrying them,I have not needed any (yet)..ditto for spare tires,starters,distributors,etc--seems if you have a spare you almost never need one..

Had a Chevy do that once, was a ground issue. Buti would check the switch first if you have not fixed it yet

The suck didn't end there. Broke my rear ring and pinion, driver's side stub shaft and my rag joint. On the same obstacle.

You have a way to get that thing home?

time for .......................................................................................... 1TON AXLES :D

No. Got a rear end. Motor won't run now. Loads up and dies. Ran awesome for about 5 miles.

the suck just doesnt end...............

Been texting with him and it sounds like their making time now. His passenger needs to be at work in the morning so they'll be driving all night.

Just talked to him and their about 90 miles from home with vapor lock problems, advised changing the filter, then fuel pump.

Says it goes about 5 miles from a coldish start and then will idle but won't run in gear.

From what I know it's a stockish fuel system so pump on the side of the block, fuel filter up by the carb and some sort of stock or stock replacement carb. Says the fuel lines aren't touching any direct heat sources as well.

Thoughts from guys that know carb setups better than I do would be great. They did have a ignition issue that resulted in them trying to pinch the fuel line to shut the truck off. Doubt this would cause an issue with the pump but could it?

Edit: While on the phone with him I pulled up the thread where Deuling puts an old Mopar filter on with the return barb on it. Gave him part numbers to try to get that part and put it on with a temp return line to see it that solves the issue.
