I am trying to buy a parts truck about 2 hours away. I called today and the guy can't tell the axle ratio and thinks the truck has a TH400. He gave me the VIN and it comes back 1982 K20 6.2L diesel shortbed. He also said it was a camper special. Did they put a TH400 behind a 6.2L in a 3/4 ton in 1982? What gears would have been offered with that setup? I am trying to decide if it is worth wasting gas on to find out its got 3.42s or something. I am hoping for 3.73 or 4.10 but I am not sure they geared that low for the diesel. Any ideas would be appreciated.

The th400 was the only auto offered in an 82 3/4 ton to the best of my knowledge.

And my guess is that only 3.73's and 4.10's were offered in 3/4 tons also....don't think the 3/4 tons came in 3.42's or 3.08's.

But wait for someone more knowledgeable to chime in before you go and see it.

My '76 K20 camper special came with 4.10 in the rear and 4.09 in the front. kinda wondering about that random mismatched deal... :/

Really, they are close enough. It had to do with different gear/diff mfg's making different ratios. There is enough slack in teh drive train and 4wd components to make up for that ratio difference.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I will check it out. I am hoping for no Gov-Lock too.

If its a 3/4 ton, it will be a 14bolt axle. The gov lock's in the 14 bolts were ok. Its the 10bolt version that were disastrous, and would destroy differentials. The 14bolt ones may not work perfectly, but they are not known to grenade.

My '82 K2500 GMC has a 6.2 and a TH400/NP208 and a 14 bolf SF drivetrain, not sure what gears it has but I'd guess 3.73's or higher ,its no dragster by any means!..

Quick way to tell if its a 700r4 is to look at the shift indicator on the dash,it'll have two "drive" positions ,one with a circle around the "D" right after neutral..a TH400 will just have the one "D" for drive..
