IS there a rebuild kit for the 3 speed. She has a 305 and the tranny is old and could use to be rebuilt. But cant find CRAP on the tranny. Ive used the search but there is a lot of nonsense. with the search results

The way you say "three speed" it sounds like a manual, but the only three speed I can think of is a Turbo Hydramatic 350 aka TH350.

Which transmission do you have exactly, and is it manual or auto?

If it's an auto, check the pan. square pan is a 700R-4, square with one corner knocked off is a TH350. I'm thinking '82 might have been the era where you could have got a 700r-4 or a lock-up TH350...

If it's a manual tranny, try Novak.com and search for SM 465 there.

He might be refering to 3 SPEED on the COLUMN, the Saginaw 3spd was offered till 1986, and it was used in GM 4x4's (atleast 1/2 tons)

I believe the 1981 model year was the last year you could get a 350 turbo in a GM 4x4.

The NEW for 1982 700R4 replaced it,

If he's refering to the old venerable SM465.........well theres lots of rebuild kits out there for em, might even cheaper to swap in another trans, just make sure its 1981-up version thats 32 spline........and NOT the older 1968-80 10 spline version.

Sweet thanks for the Replys guys. Its is a Manual. 3 speed with Low. So i guess 4 speed??? But on the Shift knob it says L 1,2,3

Thats the SM465 trans, theres rebuild kits for em out there, but it might be cheaper just to swap in another used trans.

Also the early 68-74 Sm465 knobs didnt say (L) low, the redesigned knob in 75 did, and that continued until 1991. And since your K5 is a 1982, I'll assume it has the orignial (pool ball) style 4spd and Np208 shift knobs still on it.

Yup it has the Pool Ball. Thanks for the info. Ill look for a rebuild kit as i dont see much point in putting another used tranny in that may be in "the same" shape.

What`s actually wrong with the trans, shifter slop? A used trans can be bought for like $100 on CL, they don`t usually have major issues.

Well first the clutch is warped so the tranny will be out. But the tranny like when i 4 wheel i will go from reverse to 1 and it will just grind, so i let out the clutch in natural and try it again and it still grinds, there is a ton of play in the shifter

1st gear (granny) isn't synchronized, so it will grind if you don't wait a couple seconds with the clutch in.

How much side to side play is in the shifter?

Low or Granny is not synchronized, but 1st is.

Anyways about 1.5-2 Inches in any direction.

I'd consider getting the clutch sorted out first...it sounds like it isn't releasing properly which will cause all sorts of grinding issues. The shifter slop issue is very common, can be fixed somewhat easily and doesn't really have much to do with tranny condition.

if it doesn't pop out of second gear it's probably ok, from my experience 465 trannys are noisy and shifters are kinda sloppy for today standards, I have a rebuild kit for a 465 from novak that I'm going to sell if you are interested, once I dig it out I'll list it on here

lol, 3 on the tree....what i learned to drive on...77 Custom Deluxe, blue with white side inset...drove many a mile sitting in the driveway...:thumb:

Ya definatly. Is it their master rebuild kit?
