I needed a hydroboost system for my 1988 K-5 blazer with a 14 blt FF and Dana 60, so I purchased this 1986 CHEVROLET M1031 K30 CUCV 1.4 TON CONTACT TRUCK.

The fire wall and peddle assembly, (automatic), all appear to be the same, but I know how it goes, there may be some modifications to be made, but I got the hole set up from one donor truck.

Mileage: 04129
Engine: 6.2L diesel: does not run.
Turbo 400/205 Transfer case w/ PTO for the generator that’s inside the aluminum closed box.
14 blt: 4.56 Detroit locker, but there is no tag on the rear end cover.
DANA 60: 4.56.

(1) DANA 60: Is there any possibility that the stubs are 35 spline?

(2) Any information or uses for this generator outside the aluminum closed box?

Transmission oil is very, very clean, a factory deep sump pan and a bolt on cast aluminum torque converter cover.
(3) Will this 400 trans bolt up to a non-diesel, GM engine?

Dana 60 U bolt Spring plates:
(4) Are the stock GM U bolt spring plates better or stronger then aftermarket plates?

This 1986 CHEVROLET M1031 K30 CUCV 1.4 TON CONTACT TRUCK, Rear end break backing plates, has the brake cable in front of the drums, just like my 1988 k-5 Blazer 10 blt brake cable was, and the brake drums are 5 1/8” wide, outside diameter.

The 14 blt, FF, that I put in my 1988 K-5 Blazer, is from a 1982 1 ton truck, & has the brake cable behind the drums and measure 4 1/8” wide, outside diameter.

I would like to switch backing plates to relocate the brake cable to the front just like the stock set up was.

(5) But it looks like I would also need to switch to the larger brake shoes with drums, is this correct or can I just switch backing plates?

I don’t want to convert to disk brakes, but I would like to move the brake cable to the front of the drums, like it was originally with the 10 blt.

I would like to make my money back from the purchase of this 1986 CHEVROLET M1031 K30 CUCV 1.4 TON CONTACT TRUCK.

(6) What are the Dana 60, 14 blt, 4.56 with Detroit, 400 trans, 205 transfer case and generator worth?

Thank you,

Ed

stock stubs 30 spline.

gm 90* bolt pattern bell housing = straight 6 / sbc / bbc / 6.2 / ls engines

spring plates are beefy and sell for 75.00 - 125.00 all the time on ebay . I prefer them my self .

I think someone put your backing plates on backwards / wrong sides . should never of been that way .

just the Detroit unit rear ( gm never did tags on corporate axles ) go for a easy 300-400 all day long .

the front might have a light duty trac -lok posi unit . aka trash lock is its nickname.

over here in the main land those axles bring around 1800-2k up depending on clean condition and area of demand.

grill guard some guys like and can do 100 or so .

if you were in my area I would buy the whole rollin frame / axles from ya to redo one of my rusty trucks .

The TH400 from the 6.2 will bolt up to a gas engine, the main differences are the torque converter having 6 bolts instead of 3,(3 of them will bolt to a gas engine flex plate)--and the stall speed is a bit lower for a diesel, but that wont really be an issue, unless you plan on using a hot cam that might require a higher stall speed,as GM sometimes put the same converter on heavy duty truck applications ..

The govenor is set up for quicker upshifts on a diesel too,but that is easily changed by swapping in one from a tranny behind a gas engine,or you can get a weight kit to change the shifting speeds--if its even an issue, you may not even notice it..

I recall a 70's G30 van school bus my older brother bought the TH400 and flex plate from, to put in his van, having the 6 bolt converter ,with a flex plate that had the 6 bolt holes, and it had a 292 straight six in it !..

Thank you for all your help, very valuable information.

see the spring in the spider gear window on the carrier ?

that is a Detroit locker hiding in there .

if removed need to install long bolt / threaded rod with washers to hold together before split carrier . . . . . or pops like a snake in a can joke jar .

gear was made 6-86 so truck should be a 87 model.

WOW! you guys are unreal!!!!

I have no experience with the Detroit locker, I removed both axle shaft to see if they were ok, they both look good, see pictures.

I lifted the passenger side tire in the air with the driver side tire on the ground, I was able to spin that tire (passenger side) and herd a clinking sound.

but when I spun the yoke, its like it locked up, unable to spin in either direction with the passenger side tire in the air and driver side tire on the ground.

I thought that with a limited slip diff, when you raise one tire of the ground it should not spin.

is the Detroit locker no good?

Detroit locked unless heavy resistance of a tire to kick the heavy springs and unlock it to ratchet .

think of it as almost a spool that some times unlocks . . .

The DANA 60 in this 1986 CHEVROLET M1031 K30 CUCV 1.4 TON CONTACT TRUCK.

The hubs free, and with the transfer case in 2 hi, the tires both passenger and driver side spun freely.

I then engaged the transfer case into 4 lo from 2 high, I was able to spin the front drive shaft.

Then I locked the passenger side hub, and was unable to spin that tire forward or reverse, opened up the front diff and took pictures, it appears to have clutches?

Am I wrong?

Is this a trac lok or gov lock?
When I Google the M1031, it says its a gov lock?
And does it use a stock Dana 60 carrier, another words if I wanted to install a different LS or locker, could I use this carrier? or is this carrier the same as an open differential carrier?
I under Stand If I were installing an ARB, I could not use it.

I sorry if I'm confusing.
that be a trac loc unit in there .
thank you,
Ed

like I said and you quoted trac loc unit.

if I recall there is 1 lunchbox locker to fit in a gutted unit . yepr lockright powertrax does .

92-0460-3520 is the dana 60 35 spline for a trac loc case .

arb/Detroit/Yukon all would replace the whole unit anyways .
