Hey guys. Looking at buying a 6.2 litre diesel 1986 Jimmy. Wondering which motor was the better one. The 6.2 or the 6.5? Heard the 6.5 was a better motor. Is this true? Thanks.

I notice you wrote 'j' engine. Any idea what the 6.5's designation would be? Really nervous about going diesel.Like the gas mileage but worried about passing.

The 6.5's use the VIN codes S, F, P, and Y

S = turbo, low GVW (<8600)
F = turbo, high GVW (>8600)
P = non-turbo, low GVW (<8600)
Y = non-turbo, high GVW (>8600)

"C"- and "J"-code engines designate only the 6,2l. The "J" was only in vehicles above 8600 lbs and optional in lighter models. It does without emission control and has up to 18 hp more power (dependent on the year of construction ).
