1987 K5 Blazer Smog Related Question

Hey all. I have a 1987 TBI 5.7L 350 k5. This is however a registered diesel so obviously here in CA that means no smog. I recently removed the stock manifolds, smog pumps and all the things associated with the pump and manifolds. Installed a set of headers, true duals with dual Flowmaster's and 3 in exhaust. Everything sounds great and runs great as well however the service engine light is on which is obviously associated with these modifications. My question is, is there a way to clear this code permanently, somehow delete all the smog stuff from the computer do to say?
 
I removed my pump and just plugged the vent pipes on my stock manifolds, have no codes or engine light. Have you checked the O2 sensor.
 
O2 sensor will be checked tomorrow as well as checking what the code is that is being thrown. If I remember correctly the O2 sensor wasn't plugged in before I removed all of this stuff.
 
If the O2 sensor isn't plugged in/working, fix that, see what happens.

Agree on checking what code is being thrown, but if the O2 isn't working, that is a "serious" condition that should be fixed. Likely a pain with headers, but it is the primary feedback sensor that controls the entire TBI system.
 
So when I shut the truck off the light doesn't come back on. Couldn't get a code because the light wasn't on. Drove it to work the next day and go figure half way to work the light comes back on and I didn't have my buddy's tool to get the code when I made it to work.
 
You'll need the o2 sensor and then either a CPU upgrade or someone to burn you a chip with the air pump switch turned off.
I went with DynamicEFI cpu upgrade, but you could instead just have a chip burned.
 
We'd have to go back and look, but I believe EagleMark (RIP) answered the mail on this one, that there was no AIR "feedback" with TBI. Even if there is/was, it would be tied to the O2, since fresh air is injected into the exhaust forward of the O2 sensor, and is why (at least on TPI) there is an O2 offset in the programming for when AIR is being injected.

OP, you don't need a tool to pull the codes on TBI. Paperclip or any wire plugged into ALDL terminals A and B will trigger the check engine light to spit out the codes. OBD1 "code checkers" are one of the greatest scams to make money ever. Hopefully he has something better like an auto xray XP240 that shows data too, which is actually somewhat useful. Not as good as a laptop, ALDL cable, and tunerpro, but better than nothing.
 
My best guess is either a code for 02 sensor or EGR. If you removed the EGR I would suggest you reinstall that as its a big help to the engine from self destructing.
 
He removed the air pump, when ever the computer tries to activate the pump it will throw the code. He needs to delete the function in the computer. He could try plugging the wire into the disconnected pump and it would stop tripping. But the correct way is to do the pump delete. Same for the o2 sensor, but the o2 sensor is needed and should be reinstalled.
 
So, why would mine that has the air pump removed and still running the stock chip not throw a code. I haven't noticed any troubles idling or anything. Just curious.
 
Some air pumps have the electrical connector on them and controlled by the computer, it will trip a code as would the egr removal.
 
Apparently there IS no AIR pump code in TBI trucks. I'm not lookig at the GM service manual, but Mark said it, so I trust it. Cars I would not be surprised if there was a code for it.

AIR was only used during open loop on the trucks, so no way for the ECM to monitor its operation.
 
I know on mine I had to turn the code off. It threw a code the first time I drove it with the air system removed.

Can't say why you saw what you saw, but according to that diagram (which is not a GM wiring diagram FWIW), the ECM just grounds the AIR diverter, which indicates no way to monitor actual operation.

Additionally, even in the carline GM manual I see no codes for AIR.
