1988 6.5 diesel engine surging/ smoking

If its an 88 it's a 6.2, sounds like a lift pump issue to me as an initial guess... Is your lift pump stock (mechanical) or electric. When did you last change the fuel filter? how much fuel in tank? What color smoke? If white then you have air in the system (hopefully) or could be a few other MAJOR problems...:doah:

Hey thanks for the help. I just bought the truck. I know the fuel filter needs changed. However I don't think that would cause it to smoke so bad. It seems to be running rich. Not black smoke but blue and smells of diesel really strong. As for it being a 6.5(non turbo), that is what it states. This is a 1 ton 4x4 if that makes any diff? I'll have to look it over when I get the chance. I don't know much about diesel engine, but I pick things up pretty quick.

It is probably a crate engine that was put in place of the original 6.2L... Start with changing the fuel filter. Look in the diesel forum on here for good instructions on how to do it.

It could be anything from an air leak in the fuel lines to a blown head gasket. There are some good guys that frequent the diesel forum on here that would catch your questions faster in there.

The 83 and newer engines are know for cracked heads but as for surging 2 things. change the fuel filters and inspect the rubber lines for cracking. Fuel filters clog up pretty regularly and need to be changed. I would try that 1st. (just replaced mine last wekend) also as for surging they usually run 700r4's behind all the diesels so check the throttle valve cable adjustment. I just replaced my cable, it was surging in and out of overdrive/lockup or something and after doing that she is shifting tight and no more surging. It was hard to tell wheather the surging was coming from the engine or the trans.

I have a gm crate 6.2 in my truck, depends on when it was replaced, either way it's most likely a fuel issue and the filter is the cheapest, easiest place to start. If it is a 1 ton it would never have a 700r4, from the factory atleast. Should be a th400.

I changed filter and the darn thing still smokes and the idel still is up and down. Sometimes it want to race for a short time then slows then races...I also noticed trans dosen't want work in reverse. I guess I should mention this is a 1 ton 4x4. Maybe I'll sell her as is!

If it is surging just setting in park or neutral, it may be the IP. Just my .02.
