1988 K5 700R4 swap with a NV4500/3500 manual trans from a 2004 Silverado

A 465 Muncie can’t be made into a od unit with a gear swap. You know the options 3500/4500.

4th gear in the 465 is 1:1. You could add a Gearvendors OD unit to the back of your t-case to gain OD with the 465 but it’s not cheap either. You can’t use the GV unit in 4wd either. You would be able to “split” gears with it though. 1st normal (under drive) then engage the GV for 1st/od, then shift to second (under with the GV off) then 2nd/od, etc. It gives you the ability to have 8 forward gears if you wanted to split gears each shift.

For the expense I don’t think it’s really with it. Plus it shortens the rear driveshaft length by a lot. Which adds more bs to deal with.

For the nv3500 you can use the gm master cylinder, with a an coversion fitting to an line, and a 2005 or 6 gto slave cylinder at the clutch. The factory 02 slave uses a quick connect and i didn't like the adapter fitting.

I’d use the 4 speed setup myself, but the important part you got was the hyd pedal setup, those are hard to come by. If you go with the 3500, the pedals are about all you’ll use from the 4 speed setup, I’m not sure what spline output is in a 3500 but I doubt it’s 32 which is what a 465 would have had in 86 so your transfer case would need an input swap (if you use the 465 you can use that transfer as well)

Here are the pics. First set are the nv3500. Systems from a 5.3 liter 2002 Silverado. Others are the 1986 four speed.

The output is 32 spline, my 208 from behind my th400 bolted directly up, linkage lined right up. The pedals and master work for the nv3500. You can unbolt the shift tower on top and swap it with a short throw set up if you were so inclined.

i was going to use the parts from the four speed to then use what i can with the NV 3500. the NV 3500 is from a 2002 silverado. i only have the trans. no other clutch parts. i have a complete 1986 four speed set up. pedals to transfer case. including the hydraulic clutch set up. was wondering what to do.

and is the four speed a 1.00 final gear ratio? can anyone add a numerically lower gear in that trany to make it an over drive. like set up the gears so it would have a 0.7 final trans gear?

If you are talking about the 465 then no you can't get an overdrive 4th gear. (3rd actually) Yes it is 1:1 but you wouldn't want it to be any furtherer apart from the rest of the gears than it already is. One of the down falls of the 465 (in my opinion) is the gears are so far apart.

That is exactly what I used. the 465 is 32 spline. I didn't use the 208 tcase because I wanted a SYE and used my 241c. (a better tcase anyway) You will need a 32 spline input bearing for the 241c if that's what came in your 88 k5. You will also need a pocket bearing that is sold separately. If you don't get it you will have a big hole in the center of your 32 spline input gear. You can get these parts from cobra transmission online. Don't waste your time with any of the parts stores they don't what they are and can't get them. All the other parts you have will work. The fire wall will have dimples from the factory where the hydraulic stuff goes. There are templates online to help you lay out the holes on the firewall.

thanks all!

so is the manual transmission transfer case different than the 700R4 transfer case in the '88 now? also the 32 spline input shat goes with the NV3500?

can the NV3500 go behind a stock 2004 6.0L motor? we are just daily driving this. no off roading.

if we go with the 6.0 and the 700R4 that is in there, do we need an adapter or will it bolt up to the transmission? i think we will just put the 6.0 in and then look for a NV4500 at a later date. i think he will hate the 4 speed with no over drive.

It basically bolt right in. The torque converter botton and crank pilot hole need to compatible, and a flex plate to match converter bolt circle

Is the 700R4 in good shape? If not it won’t last long behind a 6.0

That's just a 3'speed with a creeper...

I'd go. 4L80E. If using a 6.0

Or keep the 5 3. &. The NV 3500

Does the 4L80E require a one ton transfer case due to the output shaft on the trans? I remember hearing something like that
