I have a 1988 K5 that I’m rebuilding and the front seat belt mechanism has some kind of trigger switch that goes through the B pillar any one know what that does and if it’s necessary or if I can block it off ?

That button is what releases the seat belt latch when you open the door. If you have ever been bouncing around and had the seat belt lock up and not move, opening the door should release it. That the trigger button.
Quite often those are broken off from age and use.

So that being said without that little piece going through the pillar the belt won’t lock up if I were to be in an accident ?

I can't say positively. I believe that I have looked and it has no effect on the inertia latch activating. Been too long since I looked at the mechanism.
You should be able to test it by pulling on the belt quickly with the door open. (Plunger not depressed) if it locks the belt when you pull quickly, the inertia latch is good. You have to have the belt around you, or enough belt out that the inertia latch is allowed to come on, I think. It seems like it is held open when the belt is fully retracted.

You want it there. If it doesn't work, you'll end up slamming the belt in the door as it won't retract. But then again, I like stuff to work as it was intended.

I don't believe it has any other function. But IME when it doesn't work, it's an important function.
