Does anyone know off hand if an 88 suburban would have a mechanical or an electric pickup for the speedometer?

Nate

it would have a speedo cable, and an electronic sensor on the back of the instrument cluster.

I was thinking in 88 or 89 they went to an electic vehicle speed sensor (VSS) pickup instead of the mechanical cable to output the to the speedometer.

What year did they switch to the VSS?

Nate

91 in this body style. 88 in the newer body style trucks.

VSS is always electric, old body style trucks had a speedo cable up until 1989 then starting in 1990 the speedo went electric.
