What should the timing be set at? how much can you cheat it. I know about unplugging the wire before checking it. I also can not read the markers on the timing tab. can anyone tell me what pointer to be at?

thanks

I was able to figure it out. Zero as towards the ground and as you go up to the water pump it goes up to 12 I believe on the timing tab.

Stock SBC motors run between 8 and 12 degrees before TDC, if I were you I'd throw on a new timing tab so you can see the numbers good, then the easiest way to check it is with a timing light, and with the vacuum advance unplugged like you said.

Stock CARBEURATED small blocks. His is TBI, set it at 0, maybe 4 max, I have seen a few say to set at 4*, timing wire unplugged, no vacuum advance on this thing. Computer adjusts and times as it's needed.
