1989 dash

I think if you have a speedometer cable it will be the same, but have never compared them side by side. The whole plastic of the cluster did change for the electric speedometer, but I think that was sometime in 1990. There is some variation on whether or not the cluster is set up to accept a clock. The '87 date may be related to the pickups and not Blazer/Jimmy/Suburban/1-ton which stayed square a few more years.

I'd definitely want to compare the GM part numbers if I was going to be spending money sight unseen.

Yes, the 90-91 electric speedometer flex circuit is different than earlier due to the plastic housing being much different, but they also re-did the traces to do things like combine grounds and power vs. earlier ones. Who knows when GM started doing that?

Also, with the later alternator requiring a charge indicator lamp, that could be a cluster wiring difference.

I assume the proper year wiring manual compared to a 1987 would tell you as well, the first thing to check would be the wiring at the Instrument Panel (IP) connector. If any of the wire positions or functions changed, so did the flex circuit.

Aren't the alternator and choke lamps the same thing?

I would expect they could serve the same function, but at some point (at least '90, but was the change due to the CS alternator and thus earlier?) the charge indicator moved to the clock position. Choke went away but check engine and charge had to be added.

But off the top of my head I don't know if the locations/functions of the warning lights changed in the speedo and fuel gauge either between injected and carved vehicles. There were certainly enough positions for everything, I just don't know what year the change happened.

Having lost a belt before and not noticed, I need to put "add charge indicator" to my list of projects...
