1989 Toyota 4Runner

Building the truck my friend won’t be able to
I’m heading to his house Saturday to deliver the money and get the title and give this truck a once over. I won’t be able to bring it back to my house for a couple of weeks because my Tundra is getting new gears Thursday and I’ve gotta break those in.

He’s already got the new tank and pump for it. This is a platform I’ve got zero experience with but I know they are solid and will last forever with good maintenance. They seem simple enough to work on and parts aren’t that expensive. The lack of power is going to kill me but maybe some gears down the road can fix that? Or a 4.3 gm swap?

you can do a 4.3; lots of people have done it. then there are 2 ways to go.
Advance Adapters makes a bellhousing: https://www.advanceadapters.com/toy-trk-g525458w56gm-v6v8
or: https://www.advanceadapters.com/th350-x-toyota-pu-23-spl or https://www.advanceadapters.com/4762 depending if your transfer case is 21 or 23 spline

I have the 4.3 with the bellhousing adapter in my X Chassis and the T350 adapter in my other buggy

I have a 4.3; T350 and the adapter if you decide to go that way

That’s what I’m looking at. The only thing I’m focused on at the moment though is getting it driving before he runs out of time. Really hoping it’s just the fuel system and brakes. No clue when the timing belt was done last so need to get that done as well.

22RE has a chain, the 3.0 V6 has a belt that is problematic

The chain still needs to be replaced as often as the belt. At least that’s what the internet says. It’s a single roller instead of double roller and eventually it eats the plastic guide rails.

I’m gonna take a battery with me this weekend and see if it’ll spin over and what lights up.

The chain will last far longer than the belt, the 3.0 belts had a service interval of 60k iirc. The chains will break the guides but that’s a 100k+ thing.

The main problem with the 3.0’s (and early 3.4’s) was head gaskets and surface pitting from electrolysis.

This thing is cleaner than I imagined. No fluid leaks I can find. Only one spot of rust on the topper. Under carriage is clean. Maybe a valve cover bolt leak. No mice. Factory AC. Last recorded maintenance was 06 and it was all the fluids. Tires were replaced in 06 also. Sucks it went off the road then cause they are brand new but cracked pretty good. Still hold air though. Need to vacuum it out and pressure wash it and get to work. Windows are manual and roll up and down nicely. Doors open better than my k5. Gears shift nicely in the trans and transfercase. Looks like maybe a rear wheel cylinder leak.

Yes. The little buddy was helping dad tape up spots. He loves the monster trucks. I can’t wait to reorganize the garage and park this thing next the blazer. It’s so small haha.

My old boss had one like that. He swapped an older yota solid axle into it and it had low gears and lockers and just little bitty mudders and it would go all over the place.

Vacuumed it out and cleaned it out tonight. It was messy and dirty. Had to roll the rear window down which meant hooking up a battery. Only battery I have is the blazer which is side post and this one takes top post. Put the battery in and touched the terminals and like magic, it came alive. Dash, lights, blinkers, buzzer, rear window, wipers. Really got me excited. Found the tank, pump, and a new air filter in the cab along with a pair of tightey whities with obligatory holes, a beach towel, $.70 in pennys and dimes, a bag of sun flower seeds that were opened and everywhere, and a bunch of dirt and rocks.
